Skellig Michael, Co. Kerry

A safety report detailing the dangers of the tourist hot spot Skellig Michael off the coast of County Kerry has warned that tourists must be made aware of the dangers of the ancient monk settlement.

The safety review was carried out after two US tourists died while climbing to the world heritage site, which is perched 218 meters above sea level.

Last May, Joseph Gaughan (77) from Pennsylvania, died from serious head injuries after he fell while descending the steep steps. New Yorker Christine Spooner (57) from Rochester, New York, died last September after she fell while climbing the islands steps.

Tourists must climb steep and rugged steps, which are over a thousand years old. Monks inhabited the barren island over a thousand years ago.

The report made 31 safety recommendations and noted that there was a lack of awareness among visitors about what was involved in viewing the site.

Three tourists in total have died while attempting to climb the steps to the heritage site.

At the moment there is no fencing or handrails in place to assist tourists in the ascent of the island.

Conservationists and the Office of Public Works (OPW) firmly believe that the building of a handrail will destroy the natural beauty of the site.

The OPW has reconfigured some of the steps along the steep edge and has installed a steel chain along the ledge of a steep and dangerous ledge.

The safety review recommended that there should be one departure point for all the tourist boats and that they should be told of the dangers of the world heritage site.

The review described the steep slope as a route that is more acute than many mountains, and that the terrain is less forgiving than many slopes tackled by mountaineers.

The report praised the OPW and said "the health and safety of all visitors remains an absolute priority for the OPW."

The report has insisted that notices should be placed in the press and "in all promotional literature" displaying the official opening and closing times of the island and warning tourists of the dangers of the island.

I am over 40 and was just on Skellig Michael a few weeks ago. Although the climb was physically challenging, I found nothing dangerous as long as you are careful and watch your steps (yes, those puffins can be distracting). I think a good warning ahead of time should be sufficient, I'd hate to see such a beautiful site marred by railings.

Ireland should not emulate America in catering to people who take on ill-advised risks. In the States we have far too many precautions intended to discourage lawsuits, and the Irish authorities should not become as overprotective by ruining the rock with a handrail. The suggested precautions, "notices . . . placed in the press and 'in all promotional literature' displaying the official opening and closing times of the island and warning tourists of the dangers of the island," is quite sufficient.
I used to enjoy scrambling up rocky, scree-laden precipitous slopes – always a great challenge. I’m reasonably fit for my age and love a good climbing walk. I always wanted to get to the top of high mountains. One time I made it up to the summit of the Zugspitche, the highest mountain on the German/Austrian border – by cable car, I hasten to add. I got an attack of vertigo there. Yep, vertigo, I ask ya! An’ me a fit fella!! I’ve always wanted to go up Skellig Michael. Then I heard about the thousands of skeletons of mountain sheep lying at the bottom of the sea beneath that Skellig. Me, a human being, a paying tourist, climb slippery steps on near-vertical slopes? And suffer vertigo again? No thanks!
I climbed to the top of this marvelous holy site when I was in my early 40's and in excellent physical condition; even so, the ascent was quite challenging, and the descent even more so! The danger was apparent. I DO NOT BELIEVE that railings, etc. should mar/corrupt the authenticity of this pristine treasure, and I would advise those who are NOT in tip-top shape to stay below!!
Perhaps a nice comfortable movie theater on the main land showing a video of it would dissuade most. Then a mandatory warning film of a video camera or a watermelon smashing on the rocks might do it for all but the intrepid. After that, everyone takes their own risks in life. Say La V! (Yeah I know how very american!)
I think a warning sign at the bottom of the mountain is enough.
