Irish should boycott Thierry Henry and New York Red Bulls

Bookmark and Share

Irish Americans should boycott the New York Red Bulls now that Thierry Henry is coming our way.

Irish supporters have been waiting in the long grass for the announcement yesterday that Le Cheat will be signing for the Bulls and it has finally come to pass.

The long term deal will bring the French striker to New Jersey where the Red Bulls play.

He is the latest in a long line of European stars who are over the top for the major leagues but who extend their careers in America.

While soccer is thriving at underage level here in America the MLS, the major league, is about second division standard in England.

Sure there are a sprinkling of stars like Landon Donovan, but the average player is just that, average.

Some of the imports like David Beckham help popularize soccer here.

Thierry Henry may have the opposite effect.

His signing may prove to be a remarkable mistake by the Red Bull owners.

Irish Americans have long memories and they will never forget what transpired in Paris on that infamous night when Le Cheat 'handed' a World Cup berth to his team.

No wonder they did not perform at the finals proper given the bad karma the whole incident generated.

Here in New York there was more glee at France's exit than England's-- and that is saying something.

Now Henry will bring his cheating ways to America.

But Irish Americans still angry at Henry should try and organize 'Le Boycott'

Lets' go guys!

Sean O'Shea - you are an idiot! What sort of trash is this you are writing?
sean, you have to be the biggest clown on the planet. and when did irish people start using the word karma ...
If it was at the other end of the field and Robbie Keane handled the ball and sent Ireland to the world cup there wouldnt be a word about it , we would all be in debt now after refinancing our houses to go to south africa to the world cup . Its over move on , if anything the Irish should thanks HENRY for saving them a few euro .!!!!!! as for a boycott , thats stupid , if anything Sean , you should try to get your Irish central bosses there to get a few tickets for a redbull game and give them away . By the way HENRY is an Irish name and I havent seen sean come up with an Irish grandfather for Thierry yet , Landon donavon has one , Michael Bradley has one , Tom Brady has one , Pat Riley has one , heck Prez Obama has one according to your site .!!!! GO REDBULL ,
You are an absolute imbecile O'Shea. I haven't heard you advocate boycotting anything Swedish? Afterall, that's the nationality of the officials who missed the handball! Should we boycott them too? You have the mental age of a 4 year old. The Irish Voice are very hard up if you are the best they can get for sports correspondence. Way to try destroy your local football club by advocating a boycott.
WOW..the lads here are brutal on O'Shea. I don't give a shite either way however this is just a clear case of the Irish memory...we forget everything except the grudge- LOL Just kidding
You're an idiot.
Mr O' Shea - what do you feel about Maradona? You know, the guy who handballed against England in the World Cup? Or is it OK because he was cheating against the English?
OShea!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Get over it!Its now history! He just happened to be in way of a good shot! sure the ball hit his hand. but hey-------reaction came into play---------it happens---------with no intent--and we are long overdue for TV replays! Your comments re a boycott wont be any good----Jaysus you guys make me sick !
Sean O'Shea you know nothing about the game - cheating ways? He cheated to become a World Champion ? and a Champion at Arsenal in the GOLD Standard of World Soccer the Premiership? He cheated to win 6 trophies while becoming the leading scorer for his Barcelona side just 2 years ago? He cheated while scoring 226 times for Arsenal....yes, he had a bad moment IN COMPETITION...its not like that depicts his whole career - I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that all your articles are not this INANE. Again, see line one - you know nothing of the game.
Why boycott Henry? Why not boycott FIFA games, products etc., and demand that they use instant-replay? Boycotting Henry and his mediocre team isn't going to do anyone a bit of good.
Talk about holding a grudge! Let it go fer god's sake it's only football
For a time I allowed my Irish sensibilities to be outraged by O'Shea's appalling ignorance and plain stupidity. How could anyone be such a dope? How could IC tolerate this incompetent? The truth is that IC management loves this guy because he is a lightening rod for angry commentary - and the more hits IC gets on its website the more advertising revenue it generates. IC is a revenue-generating business, not a charity forum for the Irish diaspora. Instead of boycotting Henry Thierry we should boycott O'Shea - which I am doing, effective immediately.
Karma is a bitch however sometimes karma is a sweet old lady; France got their utterly ghastly and disappointing performance at the World Cup. Anyone with a hint of Irish blood laughed all the way until their departure with the French heads held well below sea level. With all the Irish in NY (yes not just eye-talians there)it is shameful that they would sign him. That being said the Red Bulls is still a business and Henry is a big name that will do well in this league. It is another attempt to bring big names to the MLS and to add some legitimacy to the league. Henry is at the end of his career and will be paid big $$$ to play in the USA and will do well. His World Cup career is over though. Lastly, I think the Irish National team actually will benefit from the Hand ball debacle. They are looked at as a solid team and are looking forward to Brasil 2014. It would have been worse for the Irish having made the WC and perhaps being embarrassed by their competitors; not saying that would happen, but you never know.
Oh God enough with the handball already. France entered and left the World cup in a cloud of disgrace as a result of this. Henry’s family has been threatened and his illustrious career with Juventus, Barcelona and Arsenal has diminished because of it. Enough! I wonder how Ireland would have fared if this hadn’t happened and if they had made it to South Africa. I dare say we wouldn’t have been victorious but this way we can passively just blame Henry over and over and over. Grow up Mr O'Shea and get real!
This is a stupid idea. During his long and ditinguished career Henry has been nothing short of a gentleman. While I was angry for a long time after that incident, it is time to move on. France got their just rewards in South Africa and this proves that KArma is a bitch. The Redbulls and MLS need all the support they can get. I suggest we go to the games and express our disapproval towards Henry. Then we can support a fledgling Soccer league and stick it to Henry at the same time. A boycott is stupid and would serve no purpose.
