In an extraordinary interview with Maureen Dowd of The New York Times Dublin Archbishop Diarmuid Martin has revealed he himself was once attacked by a pedophile and he broke down while describing what many priests of his own diocese had done.

.
Dowd stated he has also been ostracized by fellow bishops because of his stance on abuse victims and that he fears pedophiles are still at large in the church.

Speaking about the attempt to abuse him he said “One day when I was waiting on my mother,” he recalled, “I must have been about 12, this dirty old man came up and said the most horrendous things to me in the public street, and he had me sort of pinned against the wall and I could do very little about it. I was getting very upset, and I saw a policeman coming, and I called the policeman and the man ran away.”

Dowd notes that Marin could not get through a story about “a really nasty man” — an Irish priest who sexually abused, physically tortured and emotionally threatened vulnerable boys” — without breaking down.

“He built a swimming pool in his own garden, to which only boys of a certain age, of a certain appearance were allowed into it,“There were eight other priests in that parish, and not one of them seemed to think there was something strange about it.”
Dowd calls Martin “That rarest of things in the church’s tragedy: a moral voice.”

Dowd says that as a result he has been “ostracized by fellow bishops in Ireland and snubbed by the Holy See who failed to appoint him a cardinal.”

Garry O’Sullivan, the managing editor of The Irish Catholic in Dublin, told Dowd that Martin “has had a prophetic role in the church.”

“And all the prophets were stoned or murdered or ignored,” he said. “The big question is, why would the Vatican be indifferent to a guy who’s so brilliant at identifying with the victims? They should put him in charge of a protection office in the Vatican, a global watchdog against sexual abuse.”

Martin says he is still worried that abuse can happen.

“The danger now is to think, well, that’s in the past and we can sit back and relax and say it can’t happen again,” he said. “It can happen again.”

The pedophiles, he said, “have an ability to take the young children into their grips and make it impossible for them to talk. They look for the vulnerable and make them worse. You see that a lot of these men were driven not by faith but by hormones.
“One of the things that annoys me is when I see a priest get convicted, the newspapers try to get the most devilish photographs of them. The trouble is that child sexual abusers don’t look like devils. They look like charmers. If pedophiles had horns on their noses, no one would go near them.”

In a church where officials still put more energy into protecting their arcane prerogatives than protecting children, Martin has become a hero merely by stating the obvious says Dowd.

“In the case of serial pedophiles, what should have happened from the very beginning, people should have said, look, stop, these people are real dangers,” he said. “They have to be brought out, they have to be prosecuted and so on.”

Dowd states that “after hearing the story of a man who was raped as an 8-year-old, Archbishop Martin went to see a class of 8-year-olds, just to get a sense of it.

“I mean, the idea of raping an 8-year-old boy is so alien to me. It’s hard to believe it’s actually possible,” he said.

He rejects however the notion that he is a hero. “Nobody could have read what I have read and not did what I did,” he said.

There is such a thing as culpable ignorance, and if the Archbishop pleads ignorance in areas of his pastoral responsibility, he is none the less culpable. I am not impressed by his story of encountering a pedophile when he was a boy. If he thinks that was an "attack," he does not yet know what an attack is. How many people of his generation did not have such experiences in their youth? I met a few pedophiles when I was a child, but fortunately, none was a priest and I was always able to get away unharmed (except in memory), as Martin did. That experience alone should have sensitized him to situations in which he gave priests access to children without other adults being present. We're supposed to learn from experience. OK, he has knowledge and experience of predators now and ways to put his knowledge to use, and I hope to see him do that.
No more immunity for PREDATOR PRIESTS hiding behind clerical collars or their bosses . . the BISHOPS who cover up their crimes and shield them from prosecution.***RELATED: Source: Irish Times**Article: No charges two years after Ryan report into child abuse**May 30, 2011***EXCERPT: “NO ONE has been prosecuted over the discoveries made by the Ryan report into child abuse in residential institutions, which was published two years ago, the Government has revealed. The report found “sex abuse” was endemic in State-run children’s institutions over a period of five decades. It was published on May 20th, 2009, following a 10-year inquiry. In the wake of the report’s publication, the then government and President Mary McAleese said the report could be used to bring perpetrators of child abuse to justice.”
Those who love the TRUTH out of necessity love JUSTICE. Roman Catholics would do well to heed the words of one of your priests and a former IC Blogger who went by the moniker 'Fr. Tim' who spoke the TRUTH when he wrote : “Terrible, unspeakable crimes have been committed, with God's most-innocent the helpless victims. They were abused, beaten or raped by a clergy entrusted with their care. Almost as bad, their crimes were routinely covered up by the Church hierarchy -- perhaps even by Benedict -- and the perpetrators were left to prey on others. Church officials swore victims to secrecy and blamed them for their own abuse in acts of psychological torture. The Church used its self-made throne in society to hold police and political leaders at bay.Until now, thank God.The day of reckoning has arrived at last, and Our Heavenly Father has opened the dark skies to let His Light pour in. No one can escape God's Final Judgment, and let us pray that those who abused His Dear Children by vile act or vile cover-up, will not escape earthly judgment as well. God bless you all! -- Father Tim”***GOOGLE: 'Nobody buying what Catholic Church defenders selling' / Irish Central
The subject at hand is, these men knew who favoured what, litte boys, little girls and women. They held a priveledged position, more so than other religious affiliations and used it, in many cases, passing their victims around. God forbid, even the Anglicans crossed over, confident of being "safe". Absolution should never have been given, ever, therefore all are guilty.
"The problem is not confined to the Catholic Church - it is a societal problem, but the church is a convenient and easy target.' No, the problem isn't confined to the Catholic Church, but the church continually turned a blind eye and moved these criminals around to new pastures with new targets! The church has denied it happened, and then when it did admit it, it was more concerned about it's attorney's fees than for the victims!
Pedophiles are found in every organisation which has open access to children, e.g scout movement, public school system, Church etc. Vigilance has to be kept at all times with the most exacting of standards to deter child molesters and keep children safe. Thus this is a society-wide problem and uniform regulations should be maintained in all these organizations. Archbishop Martin does seem to be taking the lead in trying to expedite much needed reform and renewal within Church ranks. He does seem to be still meeting resistance from some quarters. I have some reservations about the Archbishop publicly excoriating his colleagues who should be able to speak for themselves while adopting a kind of martyrdom complex that plays to the gallery. The Church should be looking at this collectively and not splintered.
It's amazing what a journalist will do to gain publicity and make a few $$ at the same time. This IS NOT a NEW story. I heard archBishop Martin's account 10 years ago. @Snakehips - I couldn't agree with you more. The problem is not confined to the Catholic Church - it is a societal problem, but the church is a convenient and easy target.
I hope all stay focused on the subject at hand. Pedophiles are not only active in the Roman Catholic Church, but their psychological dysfunction is pervasive wherever they can get their opportunities to be with young victims. Let's fight this scourge on all fronts and try to withhold the "frothing at the mouth" hate of the RC Church. You know who you are...
I'm sorry guys, he doesn't do anything for me. He wouldn't have climbed the ecclesiastical ladder if there were anything like this harbouring his life. Why has he not come forward before and taken this public stand. A tear jerker and a ruse, a true Vaticano.
CATHOLICABUSESURVIVORSNI.COM---never heard as much nonsense and deceit in all my life, firstly mr martin is no prophet according to the bible if you didnt see into the future 100% you were stoned to death.those fairy abuse stories eat self death pie.a policeman came along!! our police have know everything there is to know about child abuse in n,ireland in detail in childrens homes and parishes over 40 years.his crocodile tears fool no-one a wolf in sheeps clothing according to the book.he couldnt imagine what abusing an 8 year old would be like taken at face value he should ask his comrades for thousands of them have abused -8 8 year olds in the 32 counties, publically he must demand cardinal sean brady, bishop mc areavey, treanor and the rest to call for a public inquiry into catholic church child abuse in parishes and the and childrens homes in northern ireland, and until he does so since he says he sees his sin of cover up remains.
May God bless Archbishop Martin for being a real servant of the Lord, Jesus, "in season and out of season."
Fom what i have read this Archbishop is a very sincere man. However his fragility or ability to express his concern without extreme emotion signifies a lack of sexual maturity. Understandable having endured decades of Church enforced celebacy and indoctrination. In Melbourne Australia,St james Gardenvale,we had a parish priest named Fr Ronald Pickering for about 15 years. He was popular, introduced many new things including a boys choir. On many occasion he informed us he was constantly fending off adults who wanted to get close to the boys. google FR Ronald Pickering ST James Gardenvale Melbourne Victoria for the rest of the storey. And if you know where he is ring the police, H.
The church "leaders" have had their collective heads in the sand on this issue for far to long. Archbishop Martin should be commended for speaking out. Some have commented that this went on in all seminaries and all should have known what was going on. I was in the seminary from 1958 to 1962 as a teenager and never once saw nor heard of anything like this going on.
Bless you for speaking up sir, I hope more will do so.
This man carries a heavy load, trying to be a priest with so many acting otherwise. I pray for you, Bishop Martin.
