Obama promises immigration reform follows health care deal

Bookmark and Share

Prospects for immigration reform are suddenly brighter as it looks increasingly likely that a deal on health care will be struck by the Congress and a pledge from President Obama that immigration will be up next.

According to The New York Times the Obama administration has made clear its next two priorities are jobs and immigration reform. In a conversation with wavering Democrats "the president warned that his other priorities — jobs and immigration — would be tougher to achieve if the health bill does not pass." The Times reports.

Obama is quoted saying saying,"If we fail at this it’s going to be harder for us to pull the line on this other stuff. It is going to weaken our presidency.”

But earlier fears fears that the health bill might be stalled now seem to be fading and Speaker Nancy Pelosi has clearly become far more confident that she has the 216 votes in the House to pass the legislation.

If that is the case then the president has given his word to the Hispanic caucus that he will make immigration a definite focus. He made it clear at a St.Patrick's party at the White House that he was ready to focus on immigration reform.

Sunday's rally in Washington for immigration reform just as the health care bill is being debated will also focus attention on the issu.e

Obama would also be greatly strengthened by a health care victory which will inevitably strengthen his hand on immigration too.
" President Obama will prove he can get health care through" predicted Ciaran Staunton president of the Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform. "He is the first president since Roosevelt who has succeeded if he does. Immigration reform can be got through this Congress as well."

There are an estimated 50,000 undocumented Irish citizens in America with more coming as the Irish economy flounders.

olovely...You're 100% right about the Bush years and history will show it.
Olovely is an oblivious Obama-worshipper, bringing up incorrect and irrelevant stuff that has nothing to do with this article. I guess (s)he felt that (s)he HAD to say SOMETHING to counter all else being said here (although (s)he didn't really even counter it) -- so (s)he fell back onto that so-yesterday Bush-bashing. Apparently it's about all olovely has, anymore. Certainly nothing more current.
Americans are broke because for the last ten years the Bush administration allowed and even encouraged the big insurers and the mortgage lenders and the wall street corporations to gouge the public (and the public purse) for every cent they could steal as the administration waged two wars (one had no clear objective or rationale) and led us into the greatest recession since the Depression.
Because they still haven't understood why Obama was elected, the GOP will get worse before it gets better.
Why do Patrick and Niial know more about whats going on with obama than we do? I'm for Irish amnesty but couple that with 20 million Hispanics and its not good.
Of COURSE they're paid off with U.S. taxdollars, Monsoonman. It's the only way they can fund anything they do -- they certainly don't have enough public support to do it on their own. They require an involuntary money-grab in order to function. It's the same with PBS.
It was bad enough with all the Thousands (Millions??) of Mexicans here illegally and having babies at my Expense, now I find out a bunch of Irish are here Illegally too! No wonder we Americans are BROKE!!
The "community organizers" have a ready reaction force to deploy and use to counter protesters wherever they might appear. I have seen it with my own eyes, these are paid union thugs. To add insult to injury they are paid with US tax dollars to fight against the US taxpayers. How sad!
A local grass roots protest of several hundred was put in motion spontaneously here in California. People are emotionally charged against this huge socialist takeover. Within an hour a couple of busloads of paid SEIU/ACORN types came out to protest against the protesters...sickeningly staged and played up by the main stream media.
It is a sad day for the Irish in America when its people bow to threats and coercion.
Remember his words- Olsters are a hugh driver of healtcare costs- So down the road when old people are been denied healtcare based on costs remember his words. And again remember how when he was campaigning for presidency he said religion was for old fogeys. Ask any physchologist what the odds of a person who truly believes in Jesus saying reliogion or the Bible is for old fogies?
He does not reflect the will of the American people, they are protesting everywhere and he had to buy the votes of his own Democratic Senate. He hasn't won yet either. Obama got in because of the CFR,Not a landslide.name calling won't change anything.
Obama was voted into power with record majorities. He represents America and reflects the will of the American people. The poster below is either insane or a half wit.
Although I wish the best for the Irish illegal immigrants, I do, I am amazed at your insensitivity to what is happening to us here in the USA. Obama is a Communist and that is what we are fighting, not amnesty. You gush over someone you don't know about things you seem to either be ignorant of or are in favor of. Obama does not represent America.
