Catholic nuns to oppose bishops on Obama health-care bill

Bookmark and Share

It is nuns versus priests in the battle for health care reform with the news that the largest nun's organization wants passage of the bill currently before Congress while the U.S. Conference of Bishops oppose it.

"Despite false claims to the contrary, the Senate bill will not provide taxpayer funding for elective abortions," said a letter signed by 60 leaders of women's religious orders. "It will uphold longstanding conscience protections and it will make historic new investments ... in support of pregnant women. This is the real pro-life stance, and we as Catholics are all for it."

However the U.S. Conference of Bishops could not disagree more. They agree with the National Right to Life Committee that the bill makes it easier to get abortions.

"This is politics; this isn't a question of faith and morals," said Irish American Sister Simone Campbell, executive director of Network, a national Catholic social activism lobby.

"We are the ones who work every day with people who are suffering because they don't have health care. We cannot turn our backs on them, so for us, health care reform is a faith-based response to human need."

It looks like the nuns may be winning . Denis Kucinich who opposed the bill last time says he will vote yes now and so does Rep. Dale Kildee, D-Mich., who announced his support for the bill after first opposing it on abortion grounds

Kildee said "Voting for this bill in no way diminishes my pro-life voting record or undermines my beliefs," he said. "I am a staunch pro-life member of Congress, both for the born and the unborn."

The democrat party of today would be considered the communist/socialist party of JFK's era. JFK lowered tax rates and was a hawk when it came to defending America. His famous motto was: "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country"
The nuns have nothing to lose by telling the truth to power. The Inquisition of Pope Benedict is already sharpening the pitchforks and warming up the torches.
If the democrat party supports a healthcare bill that decides America's old people get medical care based on economic cost instead of medical necessity and also incudes Federal Funding for abortion, then the democratic party that John F Kennedy. Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King believed in, is dead. The democratic party will henceforth become known as the American butcher party of Americans!
Hmmm I wonder how much nuns pay the federal government in income tax? Nothing? It seems like those the most eager to pass huge measures that need to be funded by big tax increases to US taxpayers are...the no tax payers. aka: socialists.
*******Regarding abortion funding***** "Despite false claims to the contrary, the Senate bill will NOT provide taxpayer funding for elective abortions," said a letter signed by 60 leaders of women's religious orders. "It will uphold longstanding conscience protections and it will make historic new investments ... in support of pregnant women. This is the real pro-life stance, and we as Catholics are all for it."
Further more Ted Kennedy firmly opposed Federal Funding of abortion in any healthcare bill-This was firmly emphasised in his letter to the Pope before his sad death. So any democrat who votes for a healthcare bill that includes Federal Funding for abortion will be betraying some of Ted Kennedys final wishes and his memory! Surely the current American President would not betray Ted Kennedy, one of the men largely responsible for his election so quickly.
Any healthcare plan that includes Federal Funding of abortion is a direct attack on the American Constitution and on all true Christians. It also opens the evil door for the mass introduction of the Mark of The beast by Federal Law in America's hospitals.
Bravo to the Sister! It's fine for the people who have healthcare provided with their job to say "start over" or we can't afford this bill, however they would be singing a different tune if they lost their job and healthcare, or if it was their child denied care because of a pre existing condition.
Kudos to the Brides of Christ! I couldn't agree with them more.
Honestly, our Social Security and Medicare are already bankrupt. The members of congress rob Peter to pay Paul. We simply cannot afford what they are offering. Back to the drawing board I say. Certainly less spent on war and less spent on boondogle projects would help.
The nuns are the female wing of the church I am all for pro life and if the nuns are good with it thats fine by me. Its time US got its act to-gether and looked after the sick and poor people in the country. I hope Obama keeps on the pressure and get what he wants it could be well afforded if there was less spent on war efforts in other countries and look after their own.
