Last night's Republican presidential debate kicked off with Newt Gingrich apparently blaming his marital infidelities on the media.
How dare CNN and its sinister fellow travelers in the so-called 'elite media' dare to question Gingrich's integrity by raising the latest revelations of his second wife, he thundered?
Gingrich was not there to discuss his requests for an open marriage. To underline that point he then brought both CNN and host John King to the woodshed.
It's always so much easier to condemn other people's infidelities.
After all, Gingrich has admitted to having an affair with a Congressional aide (his current wife Callista Gingrich) while leading the impeachment proceedings against President Bill Clinton.
Whilst leading the charge to have Clinton removed from office for having an affair, Ginrich was having an affair. Living in his glass house, he's never been reticent about throwing stones at everyone else, in other words.
After his fiery how dare you speech last night, most - although clearly not all - of the audience at the debate gave him a standing ovation. He's fooling himself if he thinks America will do likewise.
Morality doesn't stop being morality when it's Republican election season. Gingrich has positioned himself as both a champion of marriage and traditional values, and neither of those suggest you approach your wife for her blessing on your affair.
As columnist Dan Savage has memorably put it, when it comes to matters of tradition, sexuality and marriage, Ginrich's rule seems to be: Screw as I say, not as I screw.
It will be instructive to see if he can gain a Hail Mary pass for behavior he has condemned loudly in others for decades.

Barbaral nailed it on the Republican wives' "mad, staring eyes"! I'd include Michelle Bachmann's weird stare as well. In the wives, I think it's just disbelief that they actually married those men, but Michelle has stared into the abyss of true madness.

Well, he's got chutzpah. Apparently that will take you a long way, although not all the way to let alone through the general, I suspect.
Meanwhile: what is it with Republican wives and the mad, staring eyes? This one and Laura Bush both smile like they're about to go into a very intense monologue about wire hangers.

The media people ask questions. Asking questions is in their job description. Gingrich makes moral judgments about all kinds of other people but not about himself. Making moral judgments about other people is not in his job description. Moderator John King's question gave Newt the opportunity to make a moral judgment about himself but Newt took a pass and made a moral judgment about the questioner instead: "Destructive, vicious, negative.... close to despicable" was Newt's judgment on King's question. Then he called his ex-wife a liar who talked "trash" in the interview. He missed an opportunity to reply with the common sense of the New Testament's suggestion that we not make moral judgments about the sex lives of other people but leave judgments of sexual morality to God. Hebrews 13:4: "Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral." But then he'd have to stop judging other people, and I don't believe he can do that.

The "gutter"Fox news raison D'etre is the "character assassination" of POTUS and any liberal who dares throe stones at republican hypocrites like Gingrich. Newt may have had a standing ovation amongst his fellow christian acolytes, but the general public will see him for what he is " A failed human being"

Cahir, are you deaf? You must be; because your headline is not what Gingrich either said or implied.

Newt is a "player" and if you want to be a "player" then don't get married. It is his hiprocasy that gets to me. I still can't get over dumping a wife when she was battling cancer.

Newt gives salamanders a bad name. Yes they (Newt and salamanders)are slimy, stinky, but salamanders can't help it! What a hypocrit Newt is... remember his obcession with Clinton's strayings? Guess what goes around comes around. Wish I had more faith in the voters of America to see what all the folks commenting here understand.

I love what Mike Lupica wrote about Gingrich: Not only is he on his third wife, he is also on his third religion(!) Wonder if the next religion might be Mormon and perhaps he might like to become a Fundamentalist LDS - that way he does not have to ask any female's permission to "share" himself with a lot of other females! How selfish of Marian/Marianne to want him to be monogamous and too bad that she contacted MS - not a good political wife image. Now Calista - that is a horse of a different color - younger, healthier and a lot more expensive taste! How many people who live frugally, as Newt proclaims he does, have open accounts at Tiffany's and, frankly, how many need one! Oy! (Oh another religion for Newt to chose down the line!)

My God it must be his money and status that these women see in him because it certainly can't be his intelligence or good looks. He is a jerk of the greater kind, but that is ok because that is the medias fault to.

Newt Gingrich certainly isn't greater than Our Lord and he plagued Clinton for his infidelities so why shouldn't the media plague him for his lying hypocrisy?

mrkennedy.. Newt walked out on his first cancer ridden wife. He divorced his second wife shortly after she was diagnosed with MS while he was in a longtime affair with now wife Calista. Newt has always been a master when it comes to words and message. He has subtly used code talk to pander to the fringe in his base and also bash Romney for his very GOP venture capitalist past. Newt also suddenly “got religion” just in time for the GOP primaries. Since the beginning of time politicians have used (good people) and religion to mobilize votes. I believe this is why Christ warned us to: “Beware of false Prophets who come to you in lambs' clothing, but from within they are plundering wolves.” Prophets can be spiritual or political and often cloak themselves in the message of the day.
