Rory McIlroy’s hopes of the Green Jacket are over for another year – after a nightmare Saturday at Augusta.
McIlroy slumped out of contention with an horrific back nine on moving day. Alas he moved in the wrong direction.
The world number two is now a whopping 12 shots off leaders Brandt Snedeker and Angel Cabrera on five over par.
After a bright start which saw him in the running going to Amen Corner, McIlroy fell off the leaderboard at a rate of knots.
His 79 on Saturday was just one shot less than his 80 on his meltdown Sunday in 2011.
A triple bogey seven on the 11th and a double bogey seven on the 15th left McIlroy in a tie for 44th and out of contention.
McIlroy admitted: “The margins are very small on this course and when you get on the wrong side of some of these slopes, you can’t help but get a penalty.
“It’s disappointing, especially after the good start. I feel like I was playing well and it’s just frustrating.”
The Ulsterman is already looking to 2014 to sort his problems with Augusta.
He added: “I don’t know what I’m going to do. I feel like I played smart enough. I’m playing it the way I know you should play it. I’m not taking too much on, I’m not being too defensive.
“I feel like my strategy’s right, it’s just sometimes if your execution is just that little bit off you pay a big price for it.”
