Over 30,000 people have viewed the YouTube clip of referee Willie Barrett being attacked by a man with a hurley during a match.

The incident took place last weekend during a club game in Tipperary involving Ballingarry and Carrick Davids.

About ten minutes into the game, a crazed man ran on to the pitch and hit Barrett flush on the back with a hurley.

The referee managed to shield himself from another blow before the man strolled off the field. Barrett immediately called off the game off.

The Gardai and the GAA are investigating the incident separately. There is no place in the sport for this kind of cowardly attack.
