Martin Fagan

Organizers of the May 16 Healthy Kidney 10K road race in Central Park have confirmed that Irish Olympian Martin Fagan will be part of the field.

Fagan, a native of Mullingar in County Westmeath, went to Providence College and is still based in the Rhode Island capital. At the moment he is in training camp in Flagstaff, Arizona.

The 25-year-old, who ran for Mullingar Harriers growing up, represented his country at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the marathon.  However, he was forced to pull up just short of 25 miles into the course with a hamstring injury.

The tattooed runner (Fagan is a big fan of body art) is just off setting a personal best in the 10,000m, having run a 27:58.48 in the Brutus Hamilton Invitational meet in California on April 24.

"Martin continues a legacy of Irishmen of running in New York,” New York Road Runners president and CEO Mary Wittenberg said. “His rapid rise toward the top of the distance running ranks makes him a leading contender in the Healthy Kidney 10k.”

The 25-year-old also won the Austin Half Marathon in Texas in January and beat 1984 Olympic silver medalist John Treacy's half-marathon record at the Fortis City-Pier-City half-marathon in The Hague. Fagan clocked a 1:00:57, finishing fifth in the process.
