Steafán Hanvey comes to Boston

Hailing from Downpatrick, Northern Ireland, Steafán Hanvey is a singer and songwriter returning to the US in March and April to both perform songs from his new album Nuclear Family and present the multimedia presentation "Look Behind You! A Father and Son’s Impressions of the Troubles in Northern Ireland Through Photograph and Song."

Look Behind You! is a performance-lecture that details how a father and son have negotiated the personal and political landscapes of Northern Ireland. A melding of image and voice, anecdote and memory, it showcases the prize-winning photojournalism of Steafán’s father Bobbie along with radio-edits of his interviews with some of Northern Ireland’s best-known figures.

Together, Bobbie and Steafán document the ordinary and at the same time the extraordinary – mums and dads, police and priests, the loved and the loveless, soldiers and paramilitaries, plain-folk and gentry, politicians and voters, poets, singers, painters, travelers gathered around a fire on a cold winter’s morning, the living and the dead.

In between tours, Steafán has produced his new album entitled Nuclear Family, released on February 26th. Recorded in Paris, Helsinki, and Dublin, the album was mixed by Tore Johansson (producer of Franz Ferdinand and The Cardigans), and mastered in London by Mandy Parnell (P.J. Harvey, Nick Cave)

Steafán says: "Nuclear Family is the closest thing you're going to get to a concept album without actually being a concept album. The concept is love! It's an album that meditates on the constructive and destructive forces inherent in most (normal) families and relationships.

The Look Behind You! performance-lecture will take place on Monday, April 8 from 4pm in the John J. Burns Library, Boston College, 140 Commonwealth Ave.

Steafán’s live performance of songs from Nuclear Family will take place in Club Passim on Tuesday April 9 at 8pm. Tickets $10-$12.
