Betsy the Tractor is on a mission. She is making a charity run from Los Angeles to Chicago to aid in cancer research. The tractor, originally traveling through Ireland for the same cause, will drive 2,422 miles across America's Route 66 during the month of October.
This drive is being taken as a way to aid Cancer Research, and in memory of Eileen Curran, the wife of driver Kevin Curran, one of six drivers who will cover the route.
Betsy arrived safely in America in July, giving the mechanics and the drivers time to prepare her for her epic trek. Although not the first time making a trek of such magnitude, it is the first time that Betsy has been on American soil.
Betsy was scheduled to arrive at the Stadium Bar and Grill in South Boston at 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 20. Before arriving at the Stadium, the tractor will travel down Damrell Street, passing by the corporate offices of the Mayo Group.
The group driving Betsy, which is led by Kevin Curry of Waterville, CO Kerry in Ireland, includes several farmers, all of whom have been touched by cancer. All of the money raised will be donated to the Irish Cancer Society.
Curran and his fellow drivers are overwhelmed with the many Irish people living in the States who have contacted them offering support. John McGrail, CEO of the Mayo Group is originally from Ireland, and through The Stadium, is happy to offer a $500 matching donation to the Irish Cancer Society.
According to articles written in the Irish Times, Curran and his group of farmer friends have raised significant money for the Irish Cancer Society over the last three years.
The generous donations of several local Irish benefactors will pay for the fuel to get Betsy from Los Angeles to Chicago. Donations also paid for Betsy's transport to America. Betsy gets 20 miles to the gallon, and can drive from 0 to 30 miles per hour in 20 seconds.
