Vice President Joe Biden has come out in favor of gay marriage.

His move will likely raise questions about whether President Obama will follow suit, after maintaining a neutral position on it for his first term.

Speaking on NBC’s “Meet the Press”  the devout Irish American Catholic Biden stated “I’m absolutely comfortable with the fact that men marrying men, and women marrying women, and heterosexual men and women marrying one another are entitled to the same exact rights, all the civil rights, all the civil liberties... I don’t see much of a distinction beyond that,” Biden said.

Biden hinted that a second Obama term may lead to a gay marriage bill in Congress that the president would sign.

“More and more Americans...understand that this is about a simple proposition: Who do you love? Who do you love?” Biden said.

Obama has stated his position on same-sex marriage is “evolving”, but gay rights is becoming an issue in this year’s campaign.

Last week a gay Romney staffer, Richard Grenell, left the campaign after pressure from right-wing groups.

Gay marriage bills have been passed in New York and several other states but are strongly opposed in many others.

“Denying any loving couple the chance at happiness and security that comes only through marriage is not only harmful; it’s downright un-American,” said Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation President Herndon Graddick.
