John J. Murphy, business manager at Plumbers Local Union 1, will be honored as Gael of the Year by the United Irish Counties Association of New York at its annual banquet this Friday, January 25. The event will be held in Antun's of Queens Village.

Murphy began his apprenticeship in 1984 and is a fourth generation union plumber in the City of New York.

In 1996 at age 32 he was elected recording secretary of what is the largest plumbers union in the U.S. and Canada. He was elected twice as business agent and three times as financial secretary/treasurer before his election as business manager. 

He is a sitting member on the executive boards of the Building and Construction Trades Council, the New York City Central Labor Council and the New York State Pipe Trades Association. He is chairman of Plumbers Local No. 1 Benefit Funds and most recently, was appointed to the United Association National Plumbers Industry Council. 

Murphy has also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Edward J. Malloy Construction Skills Initiative. He remains and ardent advocate for his membership and for the working class. He has testified at numerous City Council and state hearings and remains active in community and political affairs.

Murphy has received many awards and honors for his charitable and civic work.
