Notorious Irish Catholic pedophile priest found dead

Because the heterosexual priests have been unable to marry and still serve as clergy many have left the active service. The homosexual priests have remained and often are the most creative and dedicated of ministers. Those of became sexually involved with boys over 12 years are not pedophiles; that term is for prepubescents. The Jay Report issued about the 1950-2005 sexual abuse problem in the USA indicates that because there was same sex involvement by many of the priests they are not necessarily homosexual. Like the imprisoned, these men had easier access to boys and so sought sexual outlets there. Their sexual orientation is not necessarily same sex.

I think at the root of this problem is the possibility of being 'outed' by the abuser. Since Vatican II, the influx of homosexual priests has escalated where some reports have the number of priests who are homosexual around 50%! If this number is correct, doesn't it seem possible that the members of the hierarchy, who are homosexual, would reflect that percentage? What convinces me that these cover ups are motivated by a possible 'outing' is the case of the late Cardinal Bernadine, of Chicago. Personally, I became aware of one such Bishop (in the '70s ' who was notorious in 'sponsoring' gay orgies, in his home!

The best historical evidence is that Jesus rose from the dead. Jesus preached that there is a hell. We disbelieve that at our own risk and peril.

Deviant homosexual priests are dangerous to little boys and devian hetrosexual priests are dangerous to little girls. It is inappropriate to ordain them to the priesthood.

I am not judging homosexuals or homosexual priests, I am simply saying that it is not appropriate to ordain them to the priesthood - it's too dangerous (as we have seen). I think the media and the world should stop judging the Catholic Church as a whole for the sins of a few. That was my point when I mentioned "Judgment Day". It is then when we will ALL encounter the TRUTH. We should all be prepared for that day. I think it is dangerous for our souls to bash publicly Christ's Church, even though some in the Church have sinned and others suffered.

I think the point BishopSean is making is that the majority of this abuse is homosexual in nature, while the press keeps saying "pedophilia". This is an important disinction. All of you who are criticising the Church I ask you, are you tolerant of homosexuals and homosexual behavior in general? Do you speak out against it, or do you accept it as an "alternative lifestyle"? If you do, you are part of the problem along with some in the Church. I am a traditional, orthodox Catholic. The traditional bishops, priests and laity of the RC Church have been saying for decades now not to ordain homosexuals and to remove them from the priesthood, but we get blasted by the media and liberal Catholics for taking that stance. We are labeled as "homophobes" and intolerant. The problem is that the Church got highjacked over the past 50 years by wolves in sheeps clothing. Homosexual bishops and priests took over sections of the Church and ran rampant with altar boys who they considered "prize catches" for their perversions. I'm not implicating every single priest with a homosexual ideation, but the majority of them. The good bishops and priests were impotent to stop them because of the backlash against them. Those who did were persecuted. The good news? Christ will vindicate the victims of these perverted priests in this world and in the world to come and holy men in my opinion will return to the ranks of the priesthood to purify Christ's Church.

I would hope that Donal Collins found forgiveness through Jesus Christ before he died. Hell is not a place you would want you own worst enemy – a fellow human being with a soul - to suffer. We should look at Fr. Tim’s comments and enlightenment in his recent articles on ICentral as a religious psychologist. I agree with BishopSean’s relevant comparisons btw but, under this topic, not with irishathens, or Portia elsewhere. McNamara makes a valid point but needs to understand Jesus’ teachings more. I agree crime is crime and that perpetrators should face civil and, in the case of clerical people, canonical punishment. If you’d wake up and be aware of it in your local community and think about it, this same crime is committed in our neighbourhoods daily in society at large. We as humans may forgive the sinner if we want to or not; let’s leave the sin to God, where the ultimate judgement belongs.

BishopSean Here's some honesty. As a Catholic mother, I don't care about any study that tries to rationalize the sexual encounter of a grown man upon a boy under the age of 18 in a religious institution, school or rectory. Enough! 2.5 Billion dollars have been paid in litigation in the U.S. alone. The church, from the time of the early reports from then canon lawyer Fr. Tom Doyle (1980's)have been made aware of the level of abuse, and decades of cover up by the Vatican. I'm sick of people trying to rationalize crimes against children, some even deaf. Crime is Crime.

Re: the caption under the photo, "A $2 million dollar study has found no connection between sexual orientation and abuse of children by clergy," I find it very interesting that 80% of clergy pedophiles were cases of males hitting on post-pubescent males. It will be interesting to see how this study will explain this phenomenon. Furthermore, in the USA, police statistics show that over 30% of cases of paedophilia were males on males, usually post-pubescent--while only 3% of the adult male population is homosexual, according to studys by Gutmacher and the U. of Chicago, which are not anti-homosexual. This infers that homosexuals are more likely to fall into paedophilia than married heterosexual males. We need to face up to this honestly.
