A rock discovered along a medieval pilgrimage route in County Kerry displays a rare and beautiful piece of art dating as far back as the Bronze Age.

The eye catching work was found on a rocky outcrop in west Kerry two weeks ago and is an illustration of 'a perfect spiral'. The artwork was discovered on a rock located off the main Cosan na Naomh on the Dingle peninsula.

Currently it is being assessed by county archaeologist Michael Connolly, the Irish Times reports.

Local man Colm Bambury, on an outing between Cill Mhiceadair and Baile an Lochaigh near the foot of Mount Brandon, happened upon the ancient artwork and was astounded by the discovery.

Although the area is dotted with standing stones, Ogham and beehive huts and other monuments from early Christianity, this particular artwork had never been catalogued before.

The eye catching work is believed to be thousands of years old and follow-up investigations by Connolly also found indications of Bronze Age enclosures and settlements in the immediate vicinity.
