LOVE is sure to be in the air on Saturday, July 12 at the New York Irish Center in Long Island City, Queens where members of the Irish community in New York will be afforded the opportunity to meet the man or woman of their dreams!"Blind Date Night," which will be mirrored on the popular British television show Blind Date, is sure to be a fun night for everyone according to Liz Kenny, executive director of New York Irish Center. "We've already had tons of nominations from local bars and restaurants and even a funeral parlor has nominated someone," said Kenny on Tuesday.Kenny explains that the event, which starts at 7 p.m., will be the perfect fun filled way to meet that someone special. Well-known local Irish actress Jo Kinsella, a/k/a Big Maggie, will play the part of host.Three single men/women of the same sex will be asked a number of questions by a single man/woman of the opposite sex, who will be able to hear them but not see them. The single man/woman will then choose her favorite mate according to their answers and the pair will each go on a date after the event.Staff from bars and restaurants as well as other businesses in Woodside, Sunnyside, Astoria, Long Island City, Elmhurst, Maspeth, Woodhaven and Manhattan all have representatives hoping to find true love or at least a good-looking date at the event. "We are also hoping we will get a few bars in the Bronx and Yonkers too," said Kenny.Event organizers have some special prizes for the happy couples to make use of on their first date. Prizes include a dreamy Hudson River brunch cruise for two people up to Newburg on July 20, two movie tickets, a interactive comedy show and a trip to Gaelic Park in which the pair get to share an Irish sporting event together.Other prizes up for grabs for the new couples are dinner for two in the Cuckoos Nest, a romantic horse and carriage ride around Central Park, tickets of the Museum of Moving Image where the new lovebirds can enjoy a stellar day of activity, and a very lucky couple will get two tickets to the Young Dubliners concert in BB Kings Blues Club in Manhattan on July 26. There will also be two tickets to a show at the Irish Repertory Theatre and dinner for two at Sidetracks in Sunnyside.Long Island matchmaker Maureen Tara Nelson will also attend the event. "Maureen will talk about relationships and how to successfully date. She will also take questions on the night," said Kenny.Joining cupid on the night will be the Irish band the Cute Hoors, and food and drinks will be served throughout the night.Tickets are $25 at the door.
