The FDNY had too many weapons for the NYPD last Friday night when they faced off in the annual challenge for charity. With a large crowd on hand at Gaelic Park, the Fire Department broke the game open in the early stages of the first half when they stormed into a 0-5 to nil lead.

Tommy Fennel and Terrence Flynn were the scoring marksmen, but the side also had to thank Tommy Furlong for making a very good save 10 minutes in on a John O’Connell shot.

The NYPD did have a pair of points before the break from Tommy Traynor and Sean Brady, but it still left the side with a lot of work to do. With Tom Walsh dominating the middle of the park and Derek Courtney picking up a lot of loose ball, countless chances were created by the winners.

They added to their lead when the second half opened, with Flynn snatching a point before following an NYPD score with a goal from an acute angle. The winners also had a number of wides as they kept the pressure on relentlessly.

The game was now becoming a battle with both sides emptying the benches and pride at stake. The Flynn brothers added to the winner’s total, while Sean Looney punctuated his personal tremendous performance with a point from play.
