Without a doubt The Edge is one of the greatest rock guitarists ever, and fans of the U2 strummer have a unique opportunity to own his very first guitar, which is being auctioned by Whyte’s in Dublin.

The provenance is interesting. Edge’s mom Gwenda, a schoolteacher in Malahide, Co. Dublin, sold her son’s guitar to a colleague who was about to take lessons, for its original price -- £20 Irish punts. The lessons never panned out but the woman kept the guitar, which Edge autographed years later.

Whyte’s reckons the instrument will fetch in the region of €1,200 to €1,800, which seems on the low side. The auctioneer says that it’s a “modest little guitar,” though, unlike Edge’s last charitable auction of a ultra-mod Les Paul guitar to assist with Hurricane Katrina relief that fetched $240,000.
