The famous dolphin from Dingle, Fungie, was spotted off the Kerry coast 30 years ago, and a weekend of anniversary celebrations will take place to mark at the event at the end of the month, according to TheJournal.ie.

After being “discovered” by lighthouse keeper Paddy Ferritter in Dingle Harbour, Fungie became an international sensation.  He also maintained his home in the harbor, and interacted well with his human fans, becoming a top tourist attraction in the process.

The weekend of celebrations, starting on April 26, will include films, music and discussions on Fungie’s impact during his time in Dingle. The first man to swim with Fungie, John O’Connor, will be a part of the opening ceremony.

A film about Fungie called “The Dolphin’s Touch” will screen during the tribute, and all events will be family-friendly, say organizers.

Many of the events will be free, and will be hosted in conjunction with the year-long Gathering celebrations. Irish broadcaster Miriam O’Callaghan will be on hand for the launch of the weekend.
