Almost one year since his divorce from Katie Holmes made headlines, Tom Cruise has revealed it came as a complete shock to him.

In a sit-down interview with German TV network ProSiebe, the 50-year-old actor admits that he was unaware that his wife of five years wanted a divorce.

"I did not expect that," Cruise said, who is currently on a promotional tour in Europe for his latest sci-fi movie “Oblivion.”

Katie Holmes filed for divorce on June 29, 2012, five days before his 50th birthday.

"Life is a challenge," he admitted, adding that the breakup was especially hard to take on his milestone birthday.

“To be 50 and have experiences and think you have everything under control, and then it hits you -- that's what life is…Life is tragicomic,” Cruise added. "You need a certain sense of humor."

Afterward, he says, he “had an unbelievable amount of time to think about it.”

Holmes has made a new life for herself in New York City with the couples daughter Suri. The 34-year-old actress recently wrapped up a run on Broadway in the play Dead Accounts.

As part of his European promotional tour, the “Oblivion” star was in Dublin last Wednesday, where he was presented with a Certificate of Irish heritage by the Deputy Prime Minister.
