Erica Lafferty, daughter to Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung who was gunned down in the Sandy Hook massacre last year, recently married Christopher Smegielski.

The 27-year-old bride visited her mother’s grave on the morning of her big day, already in her wedding dress, reports People.com.

"I wanted to let her know how much I missed her," says Lafferty. "No daughter should ever have to do that on her wedding day … and I make sure she is always part of every day, like she always had been."

Hochsprung, former principal of Sandy Hook elementary, was gunned down while trying to impede the Newtown shooter in the Sandy Hook murders last year.

She has been applauded by the community and the nation for her dedication to her students and her devotion to their safety. Now, her daughter lends her voice to the discussion on gun control, working with organization Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

On her involvement, Lafferty says, "I'm using my voice to make sure that things change and ensure no one else has to experience one of the most important days of their life without their mother due to gun violence."

She also shares her voice via Twitter with an account to promote the fight against the “senseless violence” of gun related crime.
