Calls are being made for a Binchy Bridge memorial to author Maeve Binchy, who passed away earlier this week.

According to the Herald, her husband Gordon said he was "delighted and very moved by all the tributes that have been paid to Maeve from Ireland and all over the world."

Now there is talk about naming Dublin's latest bridge across the Liffey -- currently under construction connecting Marlborough Street to Hawkins Street -- after the Dalkey native.

"I would absolutely be open to the idea," said Labour councillor Claire O'Regan.

"If anyone wants to put forward the proposal, I would consider it. Maeve was very much a writer of the people and people feel the warmth about her.

"It would only be right to honour her in this way. If people feel open to that and to approach me, I'd welcome it."

Work is already under way on the new €15m bridge, which will allow the red and green Luas lines to be linked and will also be open to buses and cyclists.
