Father Tony Flannery, a Catholic priest who has been outspoken in his criticism of the abuse crisis in Ireland, has found himself under investigation by the Vatican for his liberal views.

Founder of the Association of Irish Priests, Father Flannery told TheJournal.ie that the Vatican has contacted him to inform him of the investigation.

The effect of the investigation was immediate. This week The Irish Catholic newspaper reports that Father Flannery had to cease writing his monthly column in the Redemptorist Reality magazine in response to news of the investigation.

The Irish Catholic writer Michael Kelly reported that, “It is understood that while Fr Flannery has the support of his superiors in the Redemptorist Order, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) in Rome has expressed disquiet about some of his articles and publications.

“It is believed that the views which have come under most scrutiny are Fr Flannery’s opposition to the Church’s ban on artificial birth control and his support for the ordination of women.”

Last year, Father Flannery welcomed Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny's hard hitting criticism of the Church's decades long mishandling of the child sex abuse scandals in Ireland.

The investigation is seen by critics as a crackdown on the association, which has been described as a 'dissident group' by more conservative members of the Church.

In recent months, the association has called for changes in the Church, including its theology on sexuality. Some of the association’s priests contend that priests should be allowed to marry and that the Church should permit the ordination of female priests.

A Redemptorist, Flannery is a native of Attymon, Athenry in County Galway, Ireland. He is the youngest in the family of four. He has two brothers: Peter, who is a fellow Redemptorist at Esker Monastery in Athenry, and Frank, the Fine Gael Director of Organisation and Strategy.

The crackdown comes on the heels of the Vatican ordered Apostolic Visitation, which found evidence of what it called a 'certain tendency' for Irish priests to hold opinions that conflict with those of the orthodox Magisterium, the Catholic Church’s teaching authority.

In a sign of hardening attitudes, the Visitation participants underlined that any dissent from the formal teachings of the Church were 'not the authentic path towards renewal.'

Under the current circumstances, Father Flannery has been effectively silenced, with no indication of how long it will last.

On Holy Thursday Pope Benedict issued a very direct statement which slammed those priests who refuse to conform to church teachings.

Boy, what a gift this priest has got of being reprimended. His views are liberal? Well, we have seen much of the same before: pills, ordination of women, is this anything new? If he leaves priesthood, in one week he will be forgotten...
My point, Seanomelb, is that the priest in question, was allowed without hindrance to publicly challenge Church teachings, without so much as a verbal or written warning. Christ left the Church with the complete authority to teach and admonish with regard to the correct interpretation and distortions of key teachings and doctrines. In this case, the CDF(the congregation for the doctrine of the faith) is only carrying out the remit that it has been given.
Gearoid4 if father Flanagan is allowed to speak or write why has he been silenced by the "doctrine of the congregation of the faith" and forbidden to write in church magazines. "After all the "doctrine of the congregation of the faith" is only the re-named "inquisition".
The overtones of an oppressive regime is being spun by partisan media that Fr Flannery is an innocent victim of censorship and harassment. The truth is that this prominent priest, who has never hid his liberal credentials, has been allowed to speak and write his opinions in both the print and televisual media, without any ecclesiastical sanction, for a long number of years. The Church has decided to investigate his opinions because as an ordained priest, he is a representative of the Catholic Faith, and in that regard, his well-publicized criticisms of Church teachings has finally caused the Vatican to take some concrete action. The type of "reforms" advocated by Fr Flannery and the ACP has been tried and found wanting in the mainline protestant churches, which have suffered dramatic reversals in terms of numbers and influence across the US and Europe over recent decades.
I am sorry to read that the Vatican is silencing Fr Tony Flannery. As a Catholic physician, I have admired how Fr Flannery, and other priests, have formed the Association of Catholic Priests in Ireland. At a time when the Roman Catholic Church is dying around the world, it is very important for every interested voice to be heard. Fr Flannery has the courage to use his voice for the good of the church, and he has helped many others to find their voice, for the good of the church. This oppression by Pope Benedict XVI and by others in the Vatican reinforces to me that the leaders lack insight and vision. In fact, the leaders are not leaders, they are only poor managers of a church that desperately needs a leader of integrity. It is sad how disempowering the RCC is towards all the faithful, including the ordained. In my view, even the bishops are afraid to open their mouths for danger of being silenced. Why are Pope Benedict XVI and the Curia being allowed to use the gestapo-type tactics of silencing those who have the best interests of the church at heart? Sincerely, Dr Rosemary Eileen McHugh, Chicago, Illinois, USA
SeanO. St Patrick did not set up any "Celtic Church". There were Christians in Ireland before Ireland's Patron Saint set foot in the country. In fact there is historical evidence to show that pope Celestine sent Paladius as his personal representative to Ireland in the preceding decades, to affirm the Irish in their faith and stop the heretical belief of Pelagianism taking root there. Most historians of the early Christian period in Ireland refute any notions about a separate "Celtic Church" system in Ireland or these Islands. The inhabitants were not even self-aware of any "Celtic" notions regarding their beliefs. They were very much part of the Western Christian Latin world and local Irish customs which got into the local rite was typical of the varied nature of the rites such, as the Gallican version in Gaul(France), which were tolerated.
Time for Ireland to restore the Celtic Catholic Church established by Saint Patrick, they did not pay Peters Pence, which is why the Pope of the time awarded soveirnship of Ireland to the King of England. Now is a good time to reform.
forflann: "George I did mention the Anglican..." Just in case I was doing you a wrong, I looked back at your original post, the one in which you attacked the Catholic Church (Apr 06, 2012, 10:51 AM EDT). You did NOT mention the atrocities by Anglicans. Why can't you tell the truth? Bad enough that you're a bigot, you're a liar as well.
My late uncle, Fr John, and Fr 'Mac', our parish priest, would, I think, be shocked to learn that their 'job' was that of Vatican law enforcer. Their lives suggest quite a different view of their vocation.
Dear George I did mention the Anglican "being guilty of similar wrongs" and that torture on the part of either, is not Christ-like no matter by who. Sorry you only chose to read, or retain part, of a comment! I see the wealth of the Vatican, and think how far that is from the precepts of Christ. I look at the life of Mother Theresa and think there is a real Saint. Christ Church wasn't established as a political organisation, or a corporation. Fr. Flannery is luck he doesn't live a few centuries back, he would have been burned at the stake off being a dissenter. The pope is omniscient, yet the Borgia pope's grandson was baptised on the day of his coronation as pope, also as the leader of the Holy Roman Empire, a secular title, which by 1879 was still in effect as the Northern part of Italy, near the Alps, all that they were left controlling. I'm sure wikipedia will get you the facts. Christ did not wish to be a ruler, but to be Rabbi [teacher] for the world.
One question - where is Christ in all this? The Vatican is NOT the Church we, the people of God ARE!
AS THE Bible scripture states ---- The Truth will set you free ! Why is the Vatican so afraid of the Truth ? lets face it. the pope as had his head in the sand for many many years . the church has known the problems & just lookedthe other way thinking it would fade into History like all the other crimes it has covered up.Its high time all catholics unite and demand the vatican take action on its criminals and stand by its Good priests we need more like tony Flannery. who stand up for what is Right !
The Hierarchy of the Catholic Church has always taught that the Sensus Fidelium is an important function of the Church; at least the Hierarchy gives lip service to the idea, but in reality, I think we are ignored! "Sensus Fidelium" means "The Sense or the Belief of the Faithful," which means us! It would be interesting to ask all of these posters what "The Sensus Fidelium" is regarding the necessity of even having a Hierarchy? Are "two or more gathered together in the Name of Jesus," a church, by definition? Also, what is the "Sense of the Faithful" regarding Father Tony Flannery? Should he be silenced or encouraged?
When you become a priest you agree to follow the laws of the Catholic Church. Your job is to teach those laws to your flock and encourage them to do their best to live within those laws. The Pope, Cardinals and bishops are responsible for making changes to the laws as they deem necessary for the good of the church. The problem with the liberals and some of the conservatives is they think they have a right to change the church’s laws to fit their own agenda. All changes should come from the top down; recommendations for change should go from the bottom up for consideration.
Archbishop Harte of Melbourne forced the retirement of father Bob Maguire PP.Father Bob's work among the poor and dispossessed earned him an Order of Australia award. His outspoken liberal views upset the sensibilities of the hierarchy and against the wishes of business people, trade unionists and politicians he was sacked. His church was famous on Sundays as the only packed church in the dioceses, sadly people have moved on. He never refused help to anyone regardless of their faith or lack thereof a true Christian.
