An Irish couple owe a staggering $1 billion to banks after a property spending spree that included trophy buildings in Washington, Stockholm and London.

Brian,58, and Mary Pat O’Donnell, 56, a lawyer and a doctor respectively owe $1 billion dollars to banks all around the world including here in the US it has been revealed.

The couple , who have never featured in the media until now, are from the exclusive Killiney area of Dublin and were neighbors of Bono and lived the high life until it all came crashing down.

The couple bought Sanctuary Buildings in London right beside the Houses of Parliament. In Washington they bought an office building just a few blocks from the White House.

The Washington property was described as having  "sweeping views of the White House, the Monuments and the Potomac River".

They set a record paying $867 per square foot for it.

In Stockholm they bought the largest office block in the city.

All their purchases were based on massive bank loans given them by Irish and foreign banks with very little of their own capital.

They also bought two buildings in London's Canary Wharf  for a combibed $320 million. The buildings housed the corporate headquarters of Credit Suisse and Morgan Stanley.

Back in Dublin The O'Donnells still live in a dazzling clifftop home near  Bono.

The couple are almost unknown and have kept a very low profile. It is only now that banks are pursuing them for unpaid loans that they have become public.

"Most people in Dublin wouldn't know what they looked like. They are an extremely private family and would have hoped to have continued to conduct their business in private," a source told The Guardian newspaper.

Reading in the Mirror yesterday tycoons from Russia, India, China, Gulf states etc are buying up apartments in London starting at £6.5 million each,4 penthouses have so far sold at £135 million each. I wonder just how much were the poor old hodsmen bricklayers ,plasters, joiners, labourers etc were paid for thier labours,no D L A recipients dwelling in those Ivory Towers i bet
In the States the poor who steal three times are sent to prison for life, the rich on the other hand get bonus'. Royals around the world had commoners die fighting so they could keep their wealth or grab more. Most of the royals are gone, but in their place we have the Elite stealing us blind, while selling us lies that keep the common folk in constant fear and always at each other's throats, while they, in their ivory places around the world, have no country, no loyalty, no conscience, no ethics, no justice, no shame, no guilt, no honour. Every should go and see the documentary INSIDE JOB. Then stand up for your "common" brothers and sisters. -But in saying this, there are always the commoners the "yes" people (Yes men like Dick Cheney, Bush Senior, Rumsfelt, Kissinger) who follow orders, no matter how corrupt the orders or the methods, as long as they please the Boss!
They should change their name and disappear.
What talent. How lawywr-like. Yes, I have Donegal O'Donnell relatives. I wonder if if Pat the Lawyer is related? More info would be appreciated--like his telephone # so I could relate and compare genes.
Their higher education paid off for gaining these properties and their status will probably get them off. Same class division everywhere with the same breaks for the rich. Even here in California, Arnold pardoned an associates son, who stabbed the victim 6 times, for attempted murder. Now if the banks turn around and give these properties to house the homeless, we would have humanity restored.
the banks should be let fail, someone will take up the slack after all settles. Back to the days of building societies keep it owned by the people for da people and let common sense control not the profiteering banks and crooked politicians.
we have to stop putting ALL of the blame on the banks (although they are partially responsible) it's us idiots that could believe that our homes and businesses could be worth twice as much one year as the last, hearing people say "I couldn't afford to buy my house now" wasnt that the warning bell telling us that if succesful you cant afford it then who can - the price is wrong!!
They will re-locate to Switzerland. Let off the hook. Big money and debt are absolved. Always have been. Loop holes and lawyers. There are more crooks living around Lake Geneva than citizens.
True Story: Back in the late 80s a cousin of mine opened a large fabrication shop in Kildare just outside Naas, I was invited to visit and got the cooks tour, what I saw was a very well equipped and busy shop with 15 or 16 busy fabricators busy welding and working on numerous projects. So I said to my cousin "How did you ever manage to afford this" he simply said "I have a friend who is a bank manager". And that is all you need I guess.
I'll BET they would have preferred to have continued to conduct their business in private. Isn't that what all scammers and cons hope?!
Force them to sell a building or 2 so they can make the payments on the loans, and take their passports so they can not skip to Brazil or some such hideaway.
make them pay it all back the idiot's
They may not have been well known 'profiteers' by the general public but, you can be sure that they were well known by Fianna Fail & Friends who cut my Disability Benefit by €15 a week. Traditionally, we stupid Irish looked up in awe to wealthy people. I hope that we now have copped on to the fact that we were looking up to crooks.
Now they are 'known'. Welcome them to the world of high-scale thievery.
CitizenWhy..Quote "Symptoms of mania: charm, endless energy, story telling (facts be damned), high spirits, incredible ability to heal quickly from wounds, likable grandiosity, high intelligence, ability to be highly professionally competent",Unquote ...If the Irish people suffer from all those things we must be the envy of the world...ha ha
