A distressed mother of two in The Bronx has revealed the appalling living conditions she is being forced to live in in one of the buildings owned by Irish landlord Shawn Curry.

Curry , 43, a Cavan native, was named this week as one of the worst slumlords in New York by the Public Advocate Bill De Blassio. He claims he buys buildings in bad shape and then renovates them.

However, his tenants disagree. Luz Castro,31, pays $1000 a month to live in a one bedroom apartment at Lorillard Place in the Bronx with her husband and two young children. Their apartment block was listed on the New York’s Worst Landlords Watch list with hundreds of violations.

Eye witness reports exposed a stench of decaying garbage, beer bottled and an infestation of  rats and cockroaches in the Lorillard Place apartment building.

Speaking to the Irish Independent Mrs. Castro said she was very concerned about her children’s health. "We have all had breathing problems, it is horrible," she said. "There are rats and cockroaches in the apartment. We complain but nothing is ever done."

Earlier this week buildings owned by Shawn Curry where named as the second and fourth worst in the list published by New York Public Advocate Bill De Blasio.

MCurry with an address at Bainbridge Avenue in New York clocked up a total of 1048 violations for his numerous apartment buildings.

Speaking about the results public advocate Bill de Blasio said, "The city's worst landlords can no longer hide from responsibility while their buildings fall into dangerous disrepair".

If its that bad and they're paying their rent, move. Take a little action, don't complain and expect someone else to solve your problems.
he's fron cavan, what do you expect ..
It also sounds like low life tenants.
I expect a landlord, foreign or otherwise to keep up on the cleanliness of the building, and to make sure that the premises are repaired, free of pests, in good working order and to instruct tenants who don't understand English to throw out their trash properly. I expect a tenant, legal or not to keep their apartments clean, to follow sanitation rules by throwing out their trash properly and to surround themselves with tasteful (not expensive) things that will help them feel comfortable and proud of their surroundings. More important, it would help if tenants had a sense of aesthetics and a sense of pride in their living environment. My mother, an Italian immigrant, owns a three-story dwelling. She is by far the cleanest 83 year old woman I know. Much to her chagrin, she rented to foreigners. We live with her to help her out. My Irish-American husband makes sure the trash is separated and thrown out correctly. Fortunately, because of his Irish charm, and his no-nonsense attitude (tempered with humor) these people are FINALLY learning to have some house pride. They no longer have what I've termed as "Christ impaled" hanging in the front window, but actual drapes! Some people need to be taught. Ever read "Paradise Allely"?
What do you expect with a foreign slumlord, and his filthy illegal alien tenants.
That was a beautiful part of the Bronx when it was Irish and Jewish living there. In fact that area had the best shopping, parks, transportation . The buildings were kept clean because if you r your kids didn't neighbors let you know it. Around the 1970's crime and drugs came to the whole Fordham area and sadly white flight began just as it did to all the neighborhoods. Don't tell me it was poverty that made people destroy where they lived, the poorest of us didn't want to lie in a pig sty. I don't know what this guy was thinking buying those buildings.
"Eye witness reports exposed a stench of decaying garbage, beer bottled" Helloooo!!!!?????
A Cavan man - seems to be a pattern with folks from that county. Billy O'Reilly and folks bearing such surnames have a cunning and ruthlessness that I sense from experiences over the years. Having a need to mail some clothing this beady looker Reilly offered to mail them for me - needless to say my mother long deceased can, god rest her know what became of my good intention - a creep, a human claimer to be, got in the way. Cavan - makes me wonder what's in their water. Sir Tony is probably from there as well.
For a $1000.00/mo. Why not move across the Hdson River to New Jersey, many do you know.
Why don't they all stop paying rent - see how quick this ass gets his act together.
I Belive one will find slum landlords in every city and town in the U.S.A. Poor or Rich. That's another story.
With the example of the photo, there's no denying that this slumlord is guilty! Do the wheels of justice move so slowly or is it just a bureauocratic nightmare that enables these slum landlords to get away with it! Maybe the writer could enlighten us!
which is it curry at the begining of the article or mcurry at the end of the article
Perhaps if the tenants threw out the garbage and the beer bottles, then there would be no rats and cockroaches.
