Pope Benedict, where is the outrage on child abuse in Ireland?

Where is the outrage?
Where is the outrage?

Imagine an organization, lets call it Widgets Worldwide, which has a massive world wide empire but it affected by a very deep problem.

A small but significant segment of the workforce are discovered to be dreadful people – pedophiles, who abuse children repeatedly.

Instead of firing these dreadful people the bosses decide to move them around from place to place, sometimes from country to country to avoid them ever being found out.

Records are falsified, offenders are given a slap on the wrist and the big boss at the world headquarters sends clear instructions that the matter is to be dealt with internally and not to call in police.

This all becomes public knowledge and there is a huge hue and cry. Instead of resigning however, the bosses dig in deeper and claim they were ignorant of the full extent of the problem even though their records clearly show they were not.

Now here is where fact and fiction diverge. In the case of Widgets Worldwide the bosses who covered up, the workers who carried it out and the big boss who oversaw it all are forced to resign  and most if not all are sent to jail – after all covering up the raping of children is hardly good corporate policy is it? Widgets worldwide of course is shut down and a new company takes over having gotten rid of all the bad eggs.

Not so in real life however, especially in Ireland, where the Catholic Church continues to deny, deny and prevaricate in most cases.

The pope's statement to the people of Ireland yesterday when informed of the extent of the pedophile crisis there was a case in point. Instead of stating that the resignation  of all who had been named in the various reports as taking part or covering up pedophilia should be on his desk within 24 hours he merely punted and said it was all very upsetting but he would shortly write a letter to the people of Ireland.

Where’s the outrage, Benedict? Or should we be surprised? After all this is the pope who promoted, yes promoted, Cardinal Bernard Law of Boston when the extent of his involvement in covering up  pedophilia cases made it impossible for him to continue as head of the Boston archdiocese.

What is needed is a full clean out of the Augean stables, the resignation or sacking of every priest and bishop named in the report and a new beginning for the Church. Until then, Benedict,  spare us the encyclicals.

Rather than start a new church, I joined 30 years ago an ancient apostolic church, known under several names, such as: the Assyrian Church of the East, the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Saint Thomas Christians and the Catholic Church of the East. It was founded by the apostles Peter, Jude Thaddeus and Thomas, the first two in Seleucia Ctesifon (then Persia, now Iraq) and Thomas in India. It is liturgical, evangelical and pentecostal since its inception. The Eastern Patriarch, Mar Dinkha IV, co-signed a Christological Declaration with Pope John Paul II in 1994. The vast majority of Roman Catholics in the USA today do not adhere to -not practicing birth control. If you make an authentic statement to your priest acknowledging that is true for you and yours too: You are through! jacersisityourself -yes "Christ's message is much stronger than Kathy's ____ Christ is larger than Rome and shadow Vatican institutions that enabled pervasive institutionalized pedophile behavior in the Irish Catholic Church: premeditated criminal activity - moving priests from parish to parish and providing intricate cover up schemes. Those "religious" who committed crimes against children and humanity; and or aided and abetted crimes by lying and white washing crime scenes are the true heretics in this story. It is they who are the "proponents of heretical divergence of Christ's message." What does it really mean that Cardinal Law is comfortably ensconced in a Vatican suite and the beneficiary of 24/7 cover and the full support of the pope after his tenure in Boston? Talk about diverging from Christ and his teachings. In reality, is the past and present pope infallible in regard to this matter?
The Church of my Lord and Savior isn't filled with Pederast Priests and bishops, who cover up their sins of abuse, molestation and sodomy. That's why I left the RCC over 30 years ago, and since then I have found loving, Christian communities, filled with the real presence of Christ's love. These communities are in local churches, where the governance of the Church comes from the people in the pews, rather than far away in Rome. Jesus promised us, " By their fruits ye shall know them." Bishops, who should be responsible, "Men of God," who have continued to shuffle paedophiles from one parish to another, in my opinion are nothing more than "Minions of Satan!" Where is the "Love of Christ?" It's not found in their offices! Those who want to start a new Irish Church, I say, "Right on!" Go for it! I believe it is what Jesus would do under the current circumstances!
I don't like to say this but I can’t help but feel that KathyCallahan, in prposing a new Irish Church, is a proponent of another heretical divergence of Christ’s message. I can’t help but pray that she and her fellow-proponents do not succeed in their ideas. Christ’s message is much stronger than Kathy’s and ceciliag’s.
I agree that ceciliag missed Kathy’s point. Kathy was comparing the excusing of present-day Church wrongs with the possibility that Nazi Nuremburg defendants could have excused themselves by saying “It was what we were told to do and should be let off for the murders we committed – we were only doing our job”. But Kathy is massively wide of the mark in making the comparison. I agree the Church needs major reform and I have, many months before the Ryan and Murphy reports came out, made that point under other blogs on IC. I cannot ever see it being demolished in the way Kathy calls for – there are just too many good priests and lay people in the RCC, in Ireland and all over the world, for it to fall on the sword of the wrongs of a comparatively few. Yes, we’ve had bad popes but the Church managed to get over their scandals; it will get over this one too in time, even if notable heads have to roll, possibly including Pope Benedict’s, if the evidence comes out that he deliberately covered up, as appears to be the case.
We must create a church separate from Rome: The Irish Catholic Church is a very good place to start the pilot program. Create a equal playing field and Give the nuns their do justice and freedom to express themselves fully and without any hint of fear of retribution. And priests like the wonderful man in Belfast should be able to marry and stand alongside and with their loving families: step children, children and wives. The church pews would be full and the laiety energized! At the rate we are going we are headed towards more schools and parishes closing down and for what. And I know for what! To cover up sins and it's a massive disgrace with all of the goodness, generosity and abundance of talent in our midst from the bottom up! inn our midst. The Holy Roman Empire is a lie.
I thought this article was bang one! Wake up world! In every country in the world where there is a significant Catholic population they have found the same thing...deny, deny, deny and when caught, make a fake apology and say you are shocked. Canada, U.S., Mexico, Ireland. Same thing. Please media...help the public connect the dots. This is a worldwide problem perpetrated by a church that says it holds the standard for morality. It is time that we understand that the Catholic Church is corrupt and likely beyond redemption. Stop the tax breaks, get them out of the school systems and send the perpetrators and those who have obstructed justice to jail where they belong.
You missed my point entirely.
KathyCallahan, I am speaking of the Anointed Representatives of Christ On Earth of the Roman Catholic Church. What are you talking about? I was sexually victimized by a Catholic Priest so, that is the victimization I know about; the victimization and hypocrisy I fight against. However, if you know of other organizations or entities who are sexually butchering children and young people, then you should address that and report what you know to law enforcement authorities. Do Something About It!!! As for Catholic Victims, were it not for their courage in coming forward, the clergy of our church would still be raping children in sacristies, choir lofts, school rooms, rectories and parked cars, all over this country, all over this world. As for your, "Get Over It". Until you've been thrown over a pew in a darkened church and raped and/or sodomized by a priest, you don't know what you're talking about!! "Anti-German"??? WHOAH!!!! Sounds like you have more than Roman Catholic Issues (Such As Bund Issues) At Heart. If you refer to the man who now sits on the Throne of Peter who once had the words, "Heil Hitler" on his lips? You can bet your sweet Bippy I have issues.
Cecilag The sing song singing justifications and rationalizations tell you everything you need to know about the singers. "-Well it happens everywhere ya know. You should be focusing on other groups but instead you focus on us and Rome and I know why you're anti catholic!" The clergy and every citizen should be held accountable for breaking the law. Imagine if those who rallied in support of getting justice through the Nuremberg Trial prosecutions of the Natzi's were told: "Come on now! Crimes against humanity happen -and in many locations. But you are focusing all of your wrath on just us. Get over it. It's history. So and so said he's very sorry. I know who and what you are: You're an Anti German and incapable of Christian forgiveness!"
I have often wondered: WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO GET CATHOLICS ANGRY? WOULD THEY BE ANGRY IF THEY KNEW THE EXTENT OF THE SEXUAL VIOLENCE & HORROR COMMITTED AGAINST CATHOLIC CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE? DO THEY FIND COMFORT IN THEIR INGNORANCE OF THE DETAILS OF THESE PERVERTED ACTS AGAINST THE INNOCENT OF OUR CHURCH, PERPETRATED BY THE CLERGY, & SOME HIERARCHY, OF OUR CHURCH? I've heard Catholics say this sort of thing (sexual abuse of children) happens in all sectors of society; but since our priests are the Anointed Representatives of Christ on Earth, should our clergy not be held to a higher standard? What Say Roman Catholics???? Are the Children of Our Church TRULY Children of Almighty GOD; Or Are They Nothing More Than Sacrifices Offered On An Altar of Perversion & Filth To Satisify the Lusts of Evil & Deviant Men?
Vatican Document Instructed Secrecy in Abuse Cases By Kathleen A. Shaw Telegram & Gazette Worcester MA July 29, 2003 http://www.telegram.com/static/crisisinthechurch/072903.html The hierarchy of the Catholic church has been instructed by the Vatican at least since 1962 to keep certain cases of clergy sexual abuse secret under pain of excommunication, according to Boston lawyer Carmen L. Durso. A copy of the directive was sent yesterday to U.S. Attorney Michael J. Sullivan at his Boston office by Mr. Durso, who said he believes the church has been obstructing justice. Mr. Durso said it might also explain why Cardinal Bernard F. Law and bishops of the Boston Archdiocese and elsewhere covered up sexual abuse of children by clergy. Mr. Durso yesterday asked Mr. Sullivan to find legal grounds under federal laws to prosecute those in the hierarchy who have covered up these sexual abuse cases. Houston lawyer Daniel J. Shea provided Mr. Durso with a copy of the Vatican document, called "On the Manner of Proceeding in Cases of Solicitation" (Latin title: "Crimen Sollicit[ati]on[i]s"). Both lawyers are representing alleged clergy abuse victims in Central MA
mbernice Benedict was in the pope pipeline long before elevation...He was aware of lawsuits, investigations, cover ups and pay outs. The victims bore the pain. Benedict was all talk but his actions sanctioned their behavior, character and conduct as he protected them from outside criminal authorities; and allowed them to serve mass and interact with children in parishes.
Hey 'mbernice' why write 3 lines when 20 will do, You are so full of Bull "blaming the Church is too broad" It is this Church its Culture its Practices its Tradition And its Pope and none more so than Ratzinger the Author of Crimen Sollicitationis. Or how to hide your filth in Canon Law
Benedict wasn't pope nor was the person who was in charge of bishops when Cardinal Law was promoted. Whether he should have fired him when he took over is another question but if we are going to cast stones - let's get the facts straight. Whether or not the Pope has responded the way people want in this case, let's look at his track record - as Cardinal Ratzinger he wasn't in charge of any of this until AFTER the US scandal broke. Before he knew the facts he downplayed it thinking it was media hype. When understanding the facts what does he do - he calls priests - filth - not exactly endearing to his base is it? He disciplines Maciel, a cult like leader with an enormous following - again not exactly politically correct or covering anything up. He publicly apologizes in the US, meets with victims and does the same in Australia. He has consistently born the pain of these events. So, why the hate toward him? Why the blame? Let's place the blame and hate at the door where it belongs. The individuals who did this and the Bishops and bureaucrats who allowed it to continue. I doubt Rome still knows the extent of it. Because we all know the Pope really isn't guilty - the apology really won't help will it? And I don't buy that this is a unique Catholic culture problem - it is a human problem whenever people in power are afraid of what other people think of them and their own organizations. Only in this case, the human toll is more than tragic. Blaming others won't help the healing, blaming the Church is too broad, by doing so we really re-victimize people - in doing so, we aren't blaming the perpetarators, we are excusing them. In essence we are saying it isn't their fault - it's the system - common - think about it. If we continue to blame systems and cultures, we let the perpetrator off the hook.
