Police release new sketch of one of the Long Island serial killer’s victims

Only five of the ten victims have been identified – police publicize images for clues

Sketch of Long Island serial killer victim

Suffolk County Police have released a news artist’s sketch of one of the victims found on Gilgo Beach. Irish born Police Commissioner Richard Dormer continues to believe that the 10 bodies found over the past year are the victims of a serial killer.

The image, released on Saturday night, is police artist Danielle Gruttadaurio’s impression of one of the women murdered. Gruttadaurio was able to estimate what the woman would have looked like by working with scientists on the skull found at Gilgo Beach.

Her body parts were among those of ten victims whose murders spread over 15 years. Their bodies were buried over a 20 mile area.

The sketch shows a fair haired woman with a center parting. According to reports in the local newspaper Newsday, her legs were found on Fire Island in 1996 and her skull was found near Jones Beach last April.

This is the third sketch released. Previously, the police publicized Gruttadaurio’s sketch of a white woman and an Asian man who was found dressed in woman’s clothes.

So far five victims have been identified: Melissa Barthelemy, 24, of the Bronx; Amber Lynn Costello, 27, of North Babylon; Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, of Norwich, Conn.; Megan Waterman, 22, of Scarborough, Maine; and Jessica Taylor, 20, of New York City. All of these women worked as prostitutes.

As well as the three individuals whose sketches were released, there was also a baby girl aged 16 to 32 months old found on 4th April. She was found alongside a blood relative, thought to be her mother.

These ten victims were discovered in the last year after police began searching to find New Jersey girl Shannan Gilbert. Police now believe that Gilbert died of accidental drowning. Results on her autopsy have not been released.

Although Richard Dormer, the Police Commissioner for Suffolk County, sticks by his theory that all ten victims were murdered by one serial killer on Long Island, District Attorney, Thomas Spota, has other theories and has publicly disagreed with him on this point.
