Longtime conservative pundit Pat Buchanan offered an ominous assessment of the Occupy Wall Street movement this weekend.

Speaking at a round-table discussion on The McLaughlin Group on Sunday morning, host John McLaughlin asked him to predict the future of the movement.

'It’s going to end very, very badly with these folks in the winter and they’re not going to be getting publicity and they’re going to be acting up and acting badly like the worst of the demonstrators in the 60s,' Buchanan opined. 'They’re going to start fighting with the cops.'

McLaughlin did not ask Buchanan how he had come to his conclusion, but it followed from a discussion of the major injuries suffered by an Iraq war veteran (and former marine) who had been participating at the recent Occupy Oakland demonstrations at the weekend.

On Saturday, scores of protestors were also arrested in Denver after clashes  with local police officers in riot gear. When police sprayed Mace on the crowd several protesters retaliated by roughly pushing the police. Both sides blamed the other for the confrontation.

Author of the recent apocalyptic book 'Suicide of a Superpower: Will America survive to 2025,' Buchanan says he now believes that as long as white America is poised to lose its majority status, by 2025 the America he admires and loves will cease to exist.

But critics have countered that Buchanan's comparing Occupy Wall Street protestors to the hippies of the 1960's is naive because their objectives are dissimilar: the first group were protesting the Vietnam War and the latter group represent the anti-Wall Street, anti-corporate sentiment that has lingered since the bailout and the start of the great recession.

This guy pat B is as nuts as they come. The republicans under bush destroyed not only the USA economy but much of the wrold economy. //////////////////////And their greed continues. they are fo course our "christian party", which in itself is anything but christian. I thought Jesus told us to help the poor, not create more poor by while the rich get richer...................Is it any surprise that under Bush etc, the top 400 people are worth more money then the bottom hundred million............Jesus would trash the tables of these crooked money lenders. ...............But people like Buchannan have signed a pledge to the Tea party to follow these radical extremists hook, line and sinker......................Or face extinction by their own party, whose favorite trick is to eat their own (independent ) Young. the mccarthy era was just a warmup for these creatures. Just as the Enronn disaster was a warmup test for the scams that devasted America, Ireland,a nd much of hte world...............If there was a god, the republican convention will discover it is sitting on a fault line thta will collpase them into the hell they deserve.
Maybe your teahadist friends are hoping for a death or some other tragedy falconflash. You cannot break the OWS movement on its merits therefore any negative publicity will do. The right wing news services are running scared of the momentum of the OWS movement and moe importantly the cross section of the American public who support it.
Is anyone worried about Pitchfork Pat's opinion having any influence? His record as a prophet rivals Harold Camping's. The last time Buchanan ran for President with some weird 'reform' party nomination in 2000 after losing the GOP nomination twice, he received well under one per cent of all the votes cast.
Are you people serious? No one pays any attention to Buchanan or anything anyone on the The McLaughlin Group show says! they are DINOSAURS!
People like Buchanan feed off an apocalyptic vision (ref Naomi Klein's 'Shock Doctrine') in order to frighten the populace into listening to their version of 'wisdom' which is profitable for the Buchanans of America. The United States was not founded by Buchanans but by people who stepped into the unknown to build. If they'd listened to the Buchanans they'd never have set out for the West and something better in flimsy wagons to cross a continent. America is full of better people than the bitter Buchanans.
Another useful tool of the far -right bigots . His comments always fly in the face of his declared staunch Catholicism
... well there is an APEC gathering here next week and hopefully I'll put in an hour or two with my "I am 1 of the99%" placard. Most of our streets are blocked off even to the tourists so it might be very easy to stray into forbidden territory real easily. The cops here I think will like to get the chance to use all that new equipment and weaponry they have received for the event. God Bless those heroes in Oakland. We should all be proud of them.
what you will see unfolding is the real face of DEMOCRACY in the usa,its a facade,a mirage..the finest piece of prose ever written in the defense of freedom and human rights has been ignored overwritten destroyed by a facist neo com warmongering elitest war funded economy, the american people are a war genourous decent nation, apart from the people at the top who have taken them over and destroyed the voive of the true republic, tragic dangerous and how do we stop it..big f,,,,,,,, brother i hate you..
Does Pat Buchanan ever have anything positive to say?
Buchanan is reading Occupy Wall Street pretty close. Latest report of a woman being raped in New York City at the Occupy Wall Street Tent City.
You're right Dingus. The 60's are over. Get ready for the 201*'s. It's a different era and a different fight, but Americans have a right to assemble and protest things they feel are unjust. 71 regiment, you don't seem to know what you're talking about either. Sure, big crowds attract undesirables, but to paint a whole movement with one brush is ignorant. Pittsburghkid - you think the Tea Party movement was polite and respectful? You must have been looking at a different group of people than I did. I saw lots of terrible signs about our President and bad behavior. I also believe there were people in that movement who were sincere about their feelings of injustice, but those hateful signs I'll never forget.
VernC Have you actually seen some of the protestors with OWS? It doesn't appear so. I've seen middle aged people, people in suits, grandmothers and grandfathers, as well as young people. What hateful words you have for sonething you obviously don't understand. I think the service man boob is you.
Why does anyone still pay attention to this man?
Buchanan is a racist christian bigot. He will be consigned to history as yesterdays man.
Pittsburghkid I'm assuming you were alive during the sixties. I was in the U.S.Army. The protests not only stopped the war, they put the government on the ropes. Police changed back into civillian clothes at the station rather than drive through some areas because the animosity was so bad. I remember a man standing in front of hundreds workers at a Pittsburgh steel mill (when there were steel mills) telling the workers that the govt was using their sons as fodder. Several yelled and threatened him, and the rest of the workers told them to shut up and listen. The protests of the 60's saved lives, as if the loss of 59,000 was not enough, and 200,000 wounded, some still in VA hospitals. 40% of those that died were under 21 yrs old. If it were up to the three piece suiters, investors, and the good listeners how many more would have died for the Domino Theory
