Novelist and poet Gerard Donovan is the latest target for the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign in its bid to impose a cultural boycott of Israel.

Already the ISPC has been blamed for forcing trad group Dervish to cancel a three concert trip to Israel this summer.

Their campaign led to bitter criticism from Ireland’s Minister for Justice Alan Shatter.

Now the Irish Times reports that the ISPC is targeting Donovan whose novel Schopenhauer’s Telescope was short-listed for the Man Booker Prize.

He was due to participate in the International Writers Festival in Jerusalem this week and has now been targeted by an open letter from the campaign’s cultural liaison officer Dr Raymond Deane.

The letter urged Donovan not to ‘whitewash’ Israel by participating in the festival.

The Irish Times reports that the letter contains a link to an appeal by the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel asking writers not to participate in the festival.

It also includes a list of the 216 Irish artists who have signed up to the boycott.

Donovan, a lecturer in the University of Plymouth, could not be reached by the paper.

Fianna Fáil Senator Paschal Mooney condemned the campaign in the Senate. He said Dervish’s cancellation came as a ‘result of intimidation and bullying’.

Jamthecat your memory is failing it was the Israelis who walked away from the "handshake" with Clinton and Arafat on the lawns of the white house and reneged on their promise get your facts straight.
"ByTheBay" So, "Ireland is one of the top 3 anti-Israel countries in Europe". And this proves exactly what? Ireland also has a habit of voting "No" in referenda, and then, a few months later, voting "Yes" in the replay. THIS proves that most people in Ireland haven't got a bloody clue what's going on!! Éamonn, Dublin, Ireland. I STAND WITH ISRAEL.
ByTheBay - I live in Dublin. I don't know if Ireland will be bringing up the massacre of Christians by Islamists in Nigeria at the United Nations. I do not know everything. That's why I asked you. Now, again, can you please tell me what stupid reason I would have for saying I live in Dublin if I live somewhere else? Éamonn, Dublin, Ireland.

EamonnDublin, you supposedly live in Dublin, Ireland, seat of the Irish Government??? if you really do you should know the answer to your question mate !!!!!
"ByTheBay" - you must have missed my question!?! Will "we" be bringing up the massacre of Christians in Nigeria, at the United Nations? Éamonn, Dublin, Ireland.
Ireland has also supported and Irish men and women participated in the flotillas to break the Israeli blockade of Palestine when Israelis illegally boarded the ships in international waters and severely beat those on board.

We will be bringing up the topic of illegal Israeli settlements in Palestine at the United Nations. Israel consistently violates Palestinian rights. Ireland supports an independent Palestinian State and membership for Palestine in the UN.
When you try to force someone into doing what you want, using threats and intimidation, that makes you nothing more than a fascist. And in this case, anti-semitic. I find it interesting how those who blame Israel for everything conveniently forget it's the Palestinians and Arabs who have been keeping this hate going for more than 60 years. The Palestinians could have had their state over a decade ago, but chose more death and neverending hatred, instead. And they also forget both Syria and Jordan have had problems with the Palestinians, as well. But hey -- it fits your own hate to do the Jew-bashing, so how dare anyone take the part of Israel? Well...I'm a LIBERAL, but I also know my history and pay attention to reality. And the reality is, if the Palestinians wanted peace, they'd have it. But they don't. This non-stop slaughter has brought far too much money to those who rule them and once peace comes, the cash tap dries up, so it's in the best interests of Hamas and Islamic Jihad and all the rest to kill the doves so their devils can be paid.
1500 Palestinians are been held on "administrative detention" which means without any charges been laid, some are held in solitary confinement and most are denied family visits, those who are allowed visits are not allowed any human contact with their wives or children these conditions do not apply to Jewish inmates in Israeli jails and also contravenes Israeli law.Justice for all I say, boycotts are necessary to show the Israeli terrorist they cannot bulldoze peoples homes or kill Palestinian children or steal Arab land.
@Jinjirrie Could not agree more, well said.
BOYCOTT ISRAEL!!!
The language in this story leaves much to be desired and doesn't reflect facts. To respect the boycott of apartheid Israel is a voluntary act by people of conscience who do not need to be 'forced' into compliance. The campaign is led by Palestinians, who called for boycott, divestments and sanctions in 2005 until they achieve their just human rights guaranteed by international law - equal rights, the end to Israel's heinous apartheid and colonialism and recognition of the right to return to their lands. As it has made clear, the Israeli government uses all culture as propaganda. After principled people planning to attend cultural events realise how they will be used by the regime to obscure Israel's crimes against humanity, they often change their minds and respect the boycott in solidarity with Palestinians.
I wish I were talented enough to be invited to Israel for a cultural event. I would feel delighted and privileged to attend, and I would thank the Israelis most sincerely for being a bastion of Western civilization against constant threats from our enemy. Éamonn, Dublin, Ireland. I STAND WITH ISRAEL.
