New York’s Cardinal Timothy Dolan has called for a compassionate immigration reform in the United States.

Referring to the controversial immigration laws in Arizona and Alabama which allow law enforcement to check on the status of suspected illegal immigrants, he said that it was “not Christian” and “not American."

The Irish American Cardinal, who could be in line for the position of Pope in the future, was speaking to Chris Jansing, on MSNBC’s “Jansing & Co."

He said the Republican party must “come up with a much saner, more civil, more just immigration policy.”

Dolan continued, “When you have a policy that splits up families, when you have a policy that drives people underground, when you have a policy where now the government, whether it be in Arizona or Alabama, is asking our soup kitchens to ask for documentation before they give people food or housing or clothing or medical care, that’s not right. That’s not Catholic. That’s not Christian. That’s not religious. And it’s not American.”

The Cardinal is also the head of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. He said the bishops were in support of immigration reform.

He said “Catholics feel…Catholic bishops feel very strongly about that immigration needs reform. We're just upset where the loudest cheers in the campaign trail for whatever candidate can say the most punitive or the most angry things about immigrants. The Catholic Church is… we call our mother church , and she's traditionally welcomed the immigrant. We are a church of immigrants, so we're particularly sensitive to the rights of immigrants.”

Dolan also spoke about his opposition to President Barack Obama’s administration’s rule that religious-affiliated institutions provide health insurance for the employees that pays for contraceptive services. He said Church leaders are concerned by what they see as government restriction on religious freedoms.

The Cardinal said “What we find particularly odious, Chris, would be what we would say would be an intrusion by a bureau of the federal government into the very definition of religious ministry and the extent of this church’s service.”

What is it that the church and people don't understand about the words " Illegal " and " Immigrant " ??????
Regarding illegan immigration, I recall what I learned in the Cloyne (Cork) Cathesism in the 50s: "Is there anything else required by the Fourth Commandment? Yes, to obey the temporal rulers and all those who are in high station, that we may lead quite and peaceful lives". Giving amnesty to illegals is rewarding them for violating the laws of the U.S. The R.C. Church does NOT reward single couples who cohabitate, but permits them to marry if they do it LEGALLY. Republicans are not opposed to permitting would-be immigrants to enter the U.S. if they go through the proper channels - as generations of Irish did for centuries.
Is it possible Mr O'Dowd would convey the sentiments expressed in these comments to the. Cardinal. Somehow his eminence(lower case intentional) needs to get the message.
The Church can preach all it wants. It does not carry the authority of law. MY adcie would be to stay out of it. Personally, I would be more concerned about irregularities in the use of donated funds by friaries and monasteries. The boys got caught writing each other love letters out here and partying on charitable funds.
The Arizona law provides that all people when stop doing an illegal activity will be asked their legal or non legal status. To the cardinals concerns about families being broken up, the effort should be made to begin the process of legally immigrating. when one does things illegally, then they are open to being taken advantage of, usually by their own ethnic group.
Think of this as the clown's "Queen Latifah" moment i.e. when Bill Clinton staked out a position by criticizing the "extreme" left. Now BOBO Dolan is trying to convince he that he is bipartisan and not a stooge for the GOP. Never forger the Vatican's criticism of the nuns: they devoted too much time to the poor and social justice at the expense of abortion and gay marriage issues. I might listen to the Cardinal Clown of NY. until he shows equal commitment to issues of social justice and less of a tendency to exploit any issue that involves sexual freedom as an attack on the Catholic Church's freedom of religion. Could he grant at least some of us freedom FROM his religion???
The cardinal is a bufoon. This is America. His allegiance is may be to the Kingdom of God, but he lives in America and he is privileged to live here. It is not the responsibility of the United States of America to absorb all of the problems of the rest of the world. This is a new era and a new age. We have our own problems. He should be quiet and focus on getting justice for the thousands of victims of the errant priests of his Roman Catholic church.
Nicomax: Think you may be right. Let the Mormons pander to the minorities. They need the vote right now.
We live in Arizona and will voice our opinions about immigration through Gov. Jan Brewer and politicians in Arizona. NOT through the Catholic Church. The laws in place have to be enforced - not changed!
I hope the right in America are not hypocritical in not following the Cardinals advice on immigration reform after all they(the right) accept his advice on contraception and abortion.Or do we have a double standard?
Starting a new life in another country by being dishonest and lying is not a good thing for Church or State or law enforcement. I bought an overthe counter bottle of cough medicine, I was asked for ID, did I make a big fuss? No, I had nothing to hide. If I was a minority and decided to take exception I would have been on the evening news. The very fact that the good Cardinal went on MSNBC is a mistake in it self. The Cardinal needs to educate himself better on this issue and see the list of ramifications illegal entry to our country brings. One of the commandments is thou shalt no lie. Are you listening Cardinal?
That's ok Bythebay, because nothing you say concerns me.
Illegal means what it says ----ILLEGAL !!!
The two main drivers of comprehensive immigration reform are core religious groups, other than Mormans for the most part, and the business community not wanting to lose their ability to employ low-wage, no-benefit workers. Both are strong politically, and influence legislation.
I disagree with the Cardinal when he states the immigration policy "splits families". No one forces illegals to leave their familises in their native country or requires then to unlawfully live in the U.S. and have children here. In the 50s and 60s we immigrants had to have our green cards always, even while serving in the military? Before we obtained our permanent visas, we had to be in perfect health, not to have a police reeor, and understand English. In the 8os Reagan granted amnesty to 3 million illegal aliens, but now there are about 4 times that number here. Why is it that the Church that now encourages and supports violations of the nation's immigration laws didn't assist the God-fearing, law-abiding, tax-paying aliens of the 50s and 60s, who weren't a burden but an saaet to the country and a credit to the Catholic Church?
