Actress and activist Mia Farrow began a hunger strike for the people of Darfur on Monday, following in the footsteps of Irish protesters.

Farrow, 64, whose mother was Irish, told Fox News she’s a “little nervous” about embarking on the 21-day fast, but has resolved to go forward with her plan in a show of solidarity with the people of Darfur, Sudan.

“The people of Darfur are going to starve in huge numbers. I’m going to fast I hope for 21 days if I last that long, but the people that are going to starve to death cannot be heard, their voices cannot be heard,” she said.

“I’ve just come back from one month in the region, I have friends there and I have promises to keep. I’m proud to do whatever I can to the plight of the displaced people.”

The “Rosemary’s Baby” star points to her Irish heritage as a source of inspiration. “I'm also Irish and there is a long history of Irish using fast to draw attention to an issue and to shame perpetrators,” she said.

Farrow began her hunger strike in protest of the Sudanese government, who recently expelled international aid groups from the region.

The Irish American actress says she’ll only drink water for the three weeks, unless her health deteriorates to the point where she faces severe body damage.

Farrow prepared for the fast by spending time with her children and alleviating “whatever worries they might have,” telling the Associated Press: “I'm still a parent, and I don't want to die.”
