Links to U.S. Tea Party for Irish presidential front runner
Gay Mitchell in close contact with right wing American groups
An online blogger has revealed the close association between Irish presidential candidate Gay Mitchell and the American right wing activist and Tea Party supporter Alveda King.
Mitchell’s campaign team has already been forced to explain his plea for clemency for a killer on death row in Florida.
Now the online blogger, ansionnachfionn on the word press platform, has exposed links between Mitchell and King.
The niece of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Alveda King is a well known conservative Christian preacher with links to America’s right-wing Tea Party and fundamentalist movements including former TV rabble-rouser Glenn Beck.
King is also a pro-life campaigner and was invited to Ireland by Mitchell in the summer of 2010. During her trip she met senior Fine Gael politicians including leader Enda Kenny, now the Irish PM.
The American based anti-abortion site PNCI reported at the time: “Dr. Alveda King took the message that the civil rights movement of today is the pro-life movement to Dublin at the invitation of Gay Mitchell, Member of the European Parliament from Ireland.
“Mr. Mitchell warmly welcomed Dr. King and introduced her to members of the Irish Parliament, including Enda Kenny, leader of the Fine Gael party.”
King is notoriously anti-homosexuality according to an ABC report which stated that she had equated gay marriage with genocide.
“It is statistically proven that the strongest institution that guarantees procreation and continuity of the generations is marriage between one man and one woman,” King said at an Atlanta rally.
“We don’t want genocide. We don’t want to destroy the sacred institution of marriage.”
A report in America on King’s visit to Ireland outlined Mitchell’s involvement in her trip according to blog which quotes from a report on the near98FM radio station.
“Gay Mitchell MEP introduces Dr. Alveda King and shares with the audience his concerns at the lack of willingness within the European Parliament to address the issue of pregnancy terminations and the impact it is having in distorting the balance in genders, particularly where it is being used to ensure sex selection,” said the report.
“He outlines his contributions to this debate both, in An Dáil and the European Parliament, and calls for an Irish debate on the matter that is inclusive and based on respect for human dignity.”
Back in 1998, King said: “God hates racism and God hates homosexuality.”
Mitchell is currently on holiday but his campaign office has been inundated with media requests seeking information on his links with pro-life groups in America and closer to home.
