Liam Adams, 58, from west Belfast has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for raping his daughter.

The abuse was committed against his daughter Aine when she was aged between four and nine years old.

Adams was found guilty last month of a string of sexual assaults on Aine Dahlstrom when she was a child in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Aine waived her right to privacy in order to confront her father

Judge Corinne Philpott QC added two years probation to the end of the sentence.

Gerry Adams testified in the first case against his brother, but that case collapsed. He faced criticism over his actions relating to his brother, but has pointed out that he went to police.

But the RUC attempted to turn the daughter into an informant against Adams, it was alleged, and did not prosecute.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland recommended the Public Prosecution Service (PPS) take no case against the Sinn Fein leader for his actions concerning his brother.

It was also revealed during the trial that Gerry and Liam Adams’ father was a pedophile.
