Lennox the dog is executed Belfast City Council has confirmed

Despite appeals from leading politicians and celebrities, dog was killed

Belfast City Council has confirmed that Lennox, the 7-year-old dog at the center of a major controversy, was put down on Wednesday.

Protests against the execution of Lennox, who the council deemed a banned pit bull but whose owners claimed otherwise, took place in the US as well as in Ireland and Britain.

Last minute efforts to save the dog failed after the Northern Ireland high court had ruled he was to be put down as a banned breed.

"Belfast City Council confirmed today that the dog Lennox, an illegal pit-bull terrier type, has been humanely put to sleep," a council spokesperson said.

"This was in accordance with the order of the County Court which was affirmed by the Northern Ireland Court of Appeal.

Host of the Animal Planet network show “It’s Me or the Dog”, Victoria Stilwell, had met with Lennox’s owners, the Barnes family, and had offered to find the condemned dog a new home in the United States. However, the Belfast City Council ruled out rehousing or relocating the dog.

Despite Caroline Barnes and her family’s efforts to save their dog, he was put down after a two-year legal battle.

Lennox was condemned to death by the Belfast City Council for having the appearance of a pit bull, a breed of dog that is illegal in Britain. Despite protests in Belfast, London, and the United States, the City Council destroyed the family dog which has been in captivity for two years.

Stillwell, the celebrity dog trainer, told the Belfast Telegraph before the execution, “I have received the Barnes family’s approval to take Lennox, and while I can only imagine the heartache they would feel at seeing him go, they have said they would prefer him to have a happy life elsewhere rather than see it end.

“My long-standing private offer to absorb all of the cost and organize all of the travel arrangements to transport him at no expense to the Belfast City Council has been with those responsible for making the final decisions regarding Lennox for some time.”

Similarly, First Minister Peter Robinson had offered his support for Lennox’s case. He said he spoke with the Lord Mayor Gavin Robinson and suggested that the Council “seriously look at a rehoming option”.

He added, “Why exercise the order if there’s an alternative?.. As a dog lover I am very unhappy with the outcome of this case.”

On Monday, No Kill New York, a US-based animal rights group, staged protests outside the British and Irish consulates in the city to plead for Lennox’s life.

The Belfast Telegraph reported that their office was inundated with emails and phone calls from around the world as campaigners continued to fight for the dog’s cause. Pleas came in from the US and UK as well as Australia, Sweden, Finland, and Belgium.

Last week, the Barnes family admitted that their legal options had been exhausted. In a statement they said, “It has been almost impossible for us to accept that we have to admit defeat. We always believed there was some hope and that justice would prevail. We were wrong.”

Belfast City Council officials  ade it clear that they would not budge on the ruling. They also reported that they had received threats in the last couple of days.

A spokesperson told Ulster Television (UTV) that there had been a fresh wave of threats which had been referred to the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).

They continued, “It would be reckless and irresponsible in this particular case for the council to simply move the dog to some other place where it would pose the same danger to others.”

The council also acknowledged the "good will" on the part of those trying to save the dog but said their duty was to public safety.

ciaradexy sweets: Don't worry little one, my friends and I have started to engage in extensive conversations about where goods come from when we are about to make a purchase. Anything from Northern ireland (right now) is off limits.
I will tell you this right now, this stinks to high heaven. Their "law" is fundamentally flawed. You cannot target certain "breeds" or soon we will be doing it to humans. Remember, Nazi Germany, not so long ago. Each dog should be judged on it's own merits, how it was raised, etc. This dog had a loving family, no complaints against it, and we have seen the videos of it's "temperament" test here in the U.S. where this dog just wanted to please. NO family would fight for 2 years and spend that much money on a dog that was not a great dog. That's logic. This is a case of an abuse of power, and a Ms. Lightfoot, the dog warden, and her co-horts not wanting to admit they were wrong. They should lose their jobs. Support Lennox's law against specific breed legislation. Signed, a proud owner of two mixed breed pits in the USA
Please people, BELFAST IS NOT IN IRELAND, IT IS IN NORTHERN IRELAND, THIS IS *NOT* IRELAND AND WE DO NOT CONDONE THIS!!!
never underestimate the ability of a small group of people to be totally ignorant What good did it do to put this dog to sleep.....and by the way when and if some of these city council members get to heaven i hope lennox is there to greet the and take a big ole chunk out of their ass. wow and I thought people in the us were paranoid about pitts how embarrassed the Irish must be knowing they have these kind of people in some type of power. and the judge what a loser......he needs to be doing traffic court instead of making decisions about life........
The fact that they RULED OUT relocation when this dog could have gone to a HAPPY home where it would have been able to live legally simply proves that they're a bunch of power-hungry jerks. The problem here was not the dog, nor the breed - the problem is in the idiots who think they have the right to KILL a good dog who could have gone to a good home.
RIP Lennox at least you wont have to listen anymore to the sounds of boring banging on drums by foreign subjects on Ireland,s peaceful shores.
Wow, there are a lot of dumb f*cks on this site! Belfast is in Northern Ireland which is part of a different juristiction to 'Ireland' and so saying 'Im gonna boycott irish goods because of this'', is like me saying 'Im gonna boycott Canadian goods because they club seals in Canada'. Educate yourselves, idiots.
Unbelievably hard-hearted. Was the dog Catholic?
@donald3884: What part of Lennox being a Labrador Retriever / American Bulldog cross don't you get? He WASN'T a pit bull! They had DNA and papers PROVING it. He was murdered only because those idiots THOUGHT he looked like a pit; however, if you take a GOOD look at him, he CLEARLY looks like a LAB! Also, if you were attacked by a black man, would you judge all black men the same way afterwards? Hating an entire breed of dog because of what some individuals do is the same thing as hating an entire race. Bigotry is wrong!!! Besides, the blame lies with the people who train dogs to be mean, not the dogs, and ANY dog can be trained to attack
So the BCC felt that a previously well adjusted dog(before their dog wardens / toturers got hold of him) who was also an important part of a sick little girl's life couldn't make the same adjustment after the cruelty they inflicted on him as Michael Vick's fighting dogs, most of whom are family pets and therapy dogs, have? That says A LOT about both the BCC and its dogs wardens to me, and it isn't pretty.
There are some really sick people in the world....no excuse for this killing!
This was totally unnecessary, since Victoria Stilwell, whom hundreds of us know, from TV, would find a home, and absorb all the costs to save Lennox. I am confused, does the Council have more power then other groups in their Government? And, who was so terribly against dogs, that he and they could make that decision? It's an abuse against Power Control.
Dreadful decision. I have five rescue dogs and am appalled by my Council's action. Check out membership of Health and Environmental Services Committee on BCC website. The councillors there are named. Email them directly. Belfast operates a proportional representation formula for committees. So, if Sinn Fein or DUP have 30% of seats on Council they have 30% of membership of all committees. Dont blame all of Northern Ireland for this dreadful decision. RIP Lennox.
MichaelC I have some good friends who are American but I can't deal with the militaristic attitude of the Government although I like Obama but he hasn't really done much to bring any of the troops home. It is fine to be peace keepers but I don't think that is what the American government is about, and that is what scares me about the American government if they want something like a country they can take it and usually do. They had no business in Vietnam and no business in Iraq. The reason why the Americans have a suffering economy you just have to look at 8 million per bomb that was dropped on Iraq, just to get rid of a puppet that they put in because he wasn't adhering to there demands. Sure Saddam was an evil man and got what he deserved but I believe the biggest terrorist of them all was George Warmunger Bush and he should have been marched up those steps right after Saddam. Gearge killed as many or more innocent people that Saddma ever did. My opinion take it or leave it. George was not a good man and the American people voted the bastard in for two terms so that dosen't say much for them. Like I said we in Canada are just as stupid as we have given a monster here a majority government and he is thinking about buying jets for 35 million a shot. Then he has to find a war so they don't rot on the tarmac.
Dear Lennox, you're in a better place, running around in fields of green grass (not Ireland), beautiful scented flowers and many four legged friends who love you for you, not for what you look like, but for your beautiful, loving soul! Rest in peace gentle soul.
