Jewish sex offender takes case to High Court

A jailed sex offender in Ireland has brought a High Court challenge against prison authorities to compel them to meet his kosher dietary needs.

At Dublin’s High Court on Wednesday, Ivan Peter Gan (48), aka Peter Ivan Dunne, sought to bring judicial review proceedings against the governor of Arbour Hill, the Prison Services, and the Minister for Justice, ordering them to provide him with kosher food, reports the Irish Independent.

Kosher food is food prepared in accordance with Jewish Dietary Laws.

A convicted sex offender, Gan, who converted to Judaism several years ago, complained to the court about the lack of access to legal representatives. Representing himself, he claimed he had been unable to find an attorney.

Mr Justice Paul McDermott adjourned the case until October. He asked Gan to arrange legal representation.

Originally from Coventry, England, Gan is serving a five-year term for having sex with a mentally impaired woman in Kilkenny in 2001. He had been working in city at the time of the offence. After fleeing to England, he was extradited to Ireland in 2009.

He opposed his extradition on human rights grounds, claiming that Irish prison authorities would not provide him with kosher food, or food free from onions. He claimed there was a "a real risk, or near certainty" that he would be killed "by the ingestion of red onions".

His case was dismissed by the English courts.

Kosher meat is the flesh of dead animals killed according to Jewish ritual slaughter. I believe this involves hanging the gunbolted animal upside down by the tied rear legs, and slitting its carotid artery while unconscious, until the carcass is totally devoid of blood, considered the carriers of the dead animals spirit. Think of that the next time you order your steak medium rare. If Aristotle was right when he said that you are what you eat, does that not mean that habitual meat eaters are inevitably dead animals. Do yourself a favour - go veggie! Incidentally, do converts to Judaism have to undergo circumcison, being long past their 8th day?

Although my personal liking would be the rear ending with saucages filled with glass, that is but my opinion. However the animal still has rights,which sets us as a society aside otherwise we are on his level. Should we now deny Catholic sex offenders holy communion ? Even though the USA have not signed up to the bill this animal would recieve his cosher food if doing his time there.

You got it wrong Bobby I've never worked in a kosher factory.(someone else's post),but I did work in a factory which had Halal food.The international court has brought many terrorists to justice (they missed Bush,Cheney.Rumsfeld and Ollie North).Why should you worry the united states refuse to sign the international covenants on human rights and tthe covenant on children's rights you are right up there with Somalia and the other terrorist nations. Maith an fear leath.
