Irish abuse victim Marie Collins has been appointed by the Pope to a Vatican commission to protect children.
Collins has been appointed to the committee established in December to protect children from abuse.
The commission comprised of four men and four women, will tackle the ongoing issue of paedophilia in the Catholic Church.
Collins was abused in the 1960s and has been a vocal campaigner against the exploitation of children.
Cardinal Sean O’Malley is also on the board.
Vatican spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi said in a statement: “Pope Francis has made clear that the Church must hold the protection of minors amongst Her highest priorities.
“Looking to the future without forgetting the past, the Commission will take a multi-pronged approach to promoting youth protection.”
The Irish Independent reports that a group of international experts will further define the group’s scope.
Their initial roles will involve taking criminal action against offender, improving the screening process of priest and educating Catholics on potential exploitation of children.
