Irish Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley had his passport, new golf clubs and Ryder Cup mementos stolen when his car was broken into in San Francisco.

The Ryder Cup captain had arrived in San Francisco to take part in the Pebble Beach Pro Am tournament and had gone out with a friend for a meal.

They dined at the Cliff House on scenic Ocean Beach in the Richmond District, but while they were eating his rental car back window was smashed and his golf clubs and personal mementos were stolen.

The golf clubs were new and McGinley was looking forward to trying them out in the Pro Am.

He had several Ryder Cup mementos which he planned to auction off for charity.

“All my stuff was taken,” he said Tuesday in a telephone interview with the San Francisco Chronicle. “I was just disappointed,” said McGinley, 48. “I had only been in the country an hour and a half. It can happen in any country, or city in the world. I thought it was safe, and it didn’t cross my mind.”

McGinley spearheaded a memorable victory for Europe at last year’s Ryder Cup and is widely praised by the top European players for his skill at captaining the side.
