Irish priest bars child from school in Mass. over lesbian parents

St Paul's Elementary in Hingham, Mass.

An eight-year-old boy’s acceptance to a Roman Catholic school in Hingham, Massachusetts was withdrawn this week after it was learned that his parents are lesbians.

The family learned their son’s acceptance to Saint Paul Elementary was rescinded during a conference call with Principal Cynthia Duggan and the parish priest, the Rev. James Rafferty on Monday.

Responding quickly to the growing controversy the Archdiocese of Boston said yesterday that the school administrators were not following archdiocesan policy in barring the boy from matriculating.

Terry Donilon, director of communications for the Archdiocese, told the press that the archdiocese is now in consultation with the pastor and principal to gather more information.

On Monday, Rev. Rafferty and the school’s principal Cynthia Duggan informed the third-grader’s parents that he would be denied admission because their relationship is in discord with church teachings.

‘We weren’t hiding our relationship,’ one of the boy’s mothers, who requested her anonymity be honored to protect the child, told the press. Both she and her partner had listed their names on their son’s admission forms. ‘I’m accustomed to discrimination, I suppose, at my age and my experience as a gay woman. But I didn’t expect it against my child.’

The woman added that both she and her partner had filled out their names during the application process, which asked for the names of parents rather than mother and father, and they had attended an open house together at the school in February.

In subsequent months they paid their deposit and received the school uniform order forms. But the process changed last week when the two women were visited by Rev. Rafferty to discuss their son’s religious education. At the meeting Rev. Rafferty asked searching questions about their relationship to each other.

A few days later, Rafferty and Duggan called with their decision. While Massachusetts does have laws barring discrimination based on sexual orientation in schools, these laws apply only to public schools.

State Representative Garrett J. Bradley, who grew up in the Saint Paul parish, was outraged by the school’s decision and told the press: ‘These parents thought enough of Saint Paul’s to want to send their child there; Saint Paul’s thought enough of their child to admit him,’ Bradley said.

‘For the school to then discriminate against him and withdraw his acceptance because of their sexual orientation is not only inappropriate, but mind-blowing, Shame on St. Paul’s, and shame on us as a community if we allow it.’

The school’s decision to refuse entry to the boy is not the first time this year a child has been turned away by a Catholic school when it was discovered their parents were gay. Last month in Boulder, Colorado the Sacred Heart of Jesus School denied entry to a prekindergarten student because the child’s parents were discovered to be lesbians.

Again, why would they want to send their child to a Catholic school that teaches a religion they no longer believe in and that clearly does not recognize their relationship (fully within the Church's right).
I know for a fact that the parents were indeed hiding the makeup of their relationship on the application form. The application form clearly states mother's name, father's name. They entered a mother's name and then on the father's line they entered only initials for the first name, thereby giving the impression that they were indeed a heterosexual couple. One is not Catholic and the other a fallen away Catholic who is not interested in returning to the faith. The priest deserves our respect and prayers.
Good for the priest !
So we have a laicized priest and another who says Jesus had 2 gay dads. None of this removes the fact that it is within the private Catholic school's right to refuse admittance based on non-Catholic behavior of the parents. Cry all you want.
And they were bringing little children to him that he might touch them; but the disciples rebuked those who brought them. But when Jesus saw them, he was indignant, and said to them, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for of such is the kingdom of God. Amen I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God as a little child will not enter into it." And he put his arms about them, and laying his hands upon them, he began to bless them. Mark 10 vers. 13-16
Now, back to the point of the story here, Catholic schools were intended to educate and TO PASS ON THE FAITH to children of Catholic parents (though they, at their convenience, accept non-Catholic children as well), not to serve as 'test-case' for a couple of women involved in an un-natural liaison.-- Given their status it is clear these women do not believe the moral teachings and tenets of the CC. The school, therefore, is well within its rights to deny acceptance to a child who in his own home will witness and be taught the contradiction in the life-style his care-takers lead, and the moral and religious values he is taught at school.
Ministers in the ACCUS may call themselve bishop and Pope if they wish, and function as such within their heretical sect, yet whatever title they adjudicate to themselves is a figment except to those who follow their teachings. -- As for dermot's claim of being a priest forever, that is in fact true, the Cath priesthood is a Sacrament, yet once ex-communicated a priest is also 'laicized' as far as the CC is concerned. So long as that priest remains a member of an apostate sect he can only call himself a priest within that particular sect, or by any others willing to accept his claim.
"..the sacraments celebrated by bishops and priests of the American Catholic Church are VALID, even in the eyes of Rome. There exists not enmity between us. We are sister churches." -- Absolutely misleading statement! Here's Wiki's description: " "This church belongs to the family of the Old Catholic churches, from which it derives its claim to apostolic succession. It is in communion with some Old Catholic and Anglican/Episcopalian Churches" -- And I add, BUT NOT WITH THE CC!
In response to dermot.r, all one has to do is look at the description of the American Catholic Church on Wikipedia to define the actual status of his claim to be a priest holding apostolic succession. -- He might have been ordained by Wuerl in ‘91 but the ACC was not founded until ’99, if he then accepted the beliefs of the ACCUS it's obvious that he left the fold and effectively excommunicated himself, as have all those bishops pertaining to that sect, hence the ‘apostolic succession’ hits a dead end with their apostasy.
Greater thoughts on theology NEVER before these were uttered: "Even Jesus had two dads." --NOT!! Jesus only had ONE father. And if we are to adhere to the actual words of the bible, we can then say that in the Trinity there is only ONE person, (The Father and I are ONE), therefore Jesus is Himself the Father. His earthly father, Joseph, was only a foster father. His job was to care for Jesus and Mary, hence presenting to the world the image of a traditional family with male and female at the head, not to have relations with another man.
To ritomente: You are SO wrong on both counts. First, I was ordained by Bishop Donald Wuerl on June 1m 1991 in Pittsburgh, PA. I am now and always will be a priest - forever! Second, while not in full communion with the bishop of Rome, ALL our bishops do enjoy Apostolic Succession. Therefore, the sacraments celebrated by bishops and priests of the American Catholic Church are VALID, even in the eyes of Rome. There exists not enmity between us. We are sister churches.
When is our church ever going to learn? Where does it state that a child is to be "marked" because of the "sins" of their parents? Now what do you suppose Jesus would do if he was in charge of this? Once again, the church starts using their man made laws to inflick hurt on someone who should be given LOVE! And we wonder why church attendance is low, people are flocking to non-denominational churches it's because they accept you for what & who you are. It would have been smarter for the church to bar priests from the church who molosted children rather than sending to another pariush. Shame on that priest and the school!
Even Jesus had two dads.
There is no such thing as the american catholic church and you are not a priest.
The cheek of these bastards.
As a priest in the American Catholic Church, I am appalled at the lack of Christian love that this family experienced. I hope that people realize that there is more to the Catholic Church than the Church of Rome. www.americancatholicchurch.org
Be appalled all you want chriswalsh. And the rest of you are entitled to you opinions but the simple fact is the parish school is a private institution. Therefore it is the Church's choice to admit children of families who only follow Catholic ideals. Again, this lesbian couple chose to have a child. They also made a choice to bring their child through life under the circumstances of being gay. It is they who are using their child as a political pawn, not the Church. Choices have consequences and it is juvenile not to expect them.
I hope the people of that parish change and go to some other church. I am apalled and ashamed to say I am Irish, shame on this priest and principal. Get rid of them. (God said suffer little children to come unto me)
Where is the LOVE that Christianity teaches? There is a Scripture in the Holy Bible --- And God said the Sins of the Father are not the Sins of the Son & The Sins of the Son are not the Sins of the Father. Each will pay for their own sins. Why condemn the Child for what his parents do ? This shows me how ignorant people can be. and the Church does have double standards.
Why a gay couple would subject their child to a Catholic ethos is beyond me. Sooner or later the taunts would start in the School yard. Fuelled by self-righteous parents. At what cost is this kid's sense of belonging being bartered on the American myth of a Catholic education. Montessori Schools. Unity (mentioned below) and others have an equally fine curriculum without a 'litmus test' as to what constitues a family. This couple should leave Fr.Rafferty to his whiskey bottles and long since worn out dynamic of hiccups of what might be Holy Matrimony. My own mother in Ireland was ostracized in the parish. Forced to convert to Catholicism to legitimize the marriage. Never once was she included in their Bake Sales or Sodalities. They can kiss my yukalelee. We have gay friends here in the U.S who have a child. Two men. Who are devoted parents. A warm and welcoming household who do not flaunt a flag other than the stars and stripes. Says one "Darlings we went over the Rainbow and found that life is good" Amanda and myself cherish their friendship. We are 'uncle and aunt' to a kid given the gift of being loved. We wish this Lesbian couple a more finely tuned choice of School.
This child is the victim of discrimination and it seems to me that his civil rights are being abused. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone......? As for this studies, they are a load of BS - Ask if one would prefer Stan Laurel to George Bush for president, the study will show that George Bush is considered the best man for President...... presentation is the art.....
So very Christian of them, huh?
Several times in Massachusetts, Catholic legislators have tried to get a bill passed that would give aid to Catholic School, each time it has failed although Catholic parents are paying State taxes and are not a strain on the public schools. It is a time like that brings out the anti-Catholic voices amidst the cries of the separation of Church and State. In this case, first preference are given to children of parents who support the Parish, after that come the children who live in the Parish. The Catholic School in question is a private school and in this case can invoke the separation of Church and State. The opponents of this can't have it both ways,,when Catholic Schools were looking for aid which was a very fair request, they have been turned down on the "Separation issue". Now that the Catholic School refuses to do the Political Correct thing, the separation of Church and State is brought to the fore again by the opponents, they are "Running with the hare and hunting with the hounds". They can't have it both ways.
Separation of church and state is to protect the Church from the people, not the people from the Church.
Hmmm....this is a tough one. I was at first a bit angered that they would not admit the child because of the parents relationsip. However, if the parents are Catholic and want their child to receive a Catholic education then, yes, it is not fair. But if they do not attend the Catholic Church and just wanted a good education, there are a lot of private schools out there that can provide that with no religion involved that would have no opinion of whether they were gay or straight. They knew ahead of time that the Catholic Church is not a proponent of homosexuality. As well, I know there is limited enrollment into the Catholic schools and there might be parish members that are waiting to get their children into the school.
KMc Singer, you have no evidence to prove this. The study provided by the John Jay College of Criminal Justice who is no ally of the Catholic Church unequivocally states that the vast majority of victims are post-pubescent boys. As far as gay or straight priests, they take a vow of chastity. There's no hypocracy present.
The last time I looked, Catholic schools are private institutions and have a right to accept or reject whomsoever they please. For whatever reason, two lesbians decided to send the child to a parochial school it was for a reason other than giving the child a Catholic education. They should pick out a school whose curriculum is more in line with their current lifestyle.
Pedophilia is not homosexuality, as many of the children preyed upon were girls. I think kassieomasi1's point is that an organization that has so much pedophilia and homosexuality in it's ranks shouldn't be so hypocritical to penalize the children of homosexuals.
I thought this article was about a priest not letting a child into a school because the parents are lesbians. What does this have to do with a pedophile priest. And as science has proven, most of these priests are not pedophiles, rather they prey on post-pubescent boys, which is homosexual statutory rape. The crime is different but the punishment is not.
Shame on St. Paul's and any other Catholic institution that would discriminate in this way, especially in light of the priest predatator issues of late. Fr. Rafferty, wake up and smell the Jameson! What ever happened to "love thy neighbor"?
