NYC Council speaker Christine Quinn is topping the polls as the favorite for the next Mayor of New York, according to the latest survey.

The potential Republican candidate Police Commissioner Ray Kelly trailed each of the three leading Democratic candidates. Kelly is by far the favorite to be the GOP nominee among Republican voters.

According to the survey conducted by Quinnipiac University, Christine Quinn tops Kelly 48 - 33 percent. Former City Comptroller and 2009 Democratic candidate William Thompson leads Kelly 46 - 34 percent and Public Advocate Bill de Blasio beats Kelly 46 - 34 percent.

Kelly, a registered independent, showed a lot of support from GOP voters with 82 to 84 percent support in the survey but trails with Democrats by margins of 51 to 55 points.

An even 50 percent of the voters in the Quinnipiac poll said Kelly, a former marine, would make a good mayor.

"Ray Kelly is a great police commissioner, and he'd be a good mayor, New Yorkers think - but it's still a Democratic town. All three of the Democrats' top potential candidates beat the popular top cop," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"Voters are taking seriously all that Kelly-for-mayor noise among Republican leaders. More than half think he might run.

"Among Democrats, Council Speaker Christine Quinn is the favorite. Former Comptroller William Thompson and Public Advocate Bill de Blasio are in double digits, but she's comfortably ahead. The leader in this early look remains 'don't know.”

The poll questioned 1,066 registered city voters, including 658 Democrats, from May 3.
