A gay rights group is protesting their lack of civil rights at the Eucharistic Congress in Dublin, which starts today.

The group, LGBT Noise, wants the Church to stay out the same-sex marriage debate.

“Church leaders lobby governments to prevent LGBT people’s civil rights. Among the issues Noise campaigns on is civil marriage equality, which is a civil right not a religious rite. If Catholic leaders want nothing to do with same-sex marriage, they don’t have to have one, ” claims the group on its website.

The group says that the Catholic Church’s "detailed and shameful" history of opposing Gays is behind their protest.

“Countless church authorities defame and offend LGBT people on a regular basis,” LGBT noise said in a statement on its Facebook page

The Congress is being held in Ireland for the first time in 80 years.  LGBT Noise will protest at the RDS when the Papal League’s Cardinal Marc Ouellet opens the congress, which runs until Friday.

According to TheJournal.ie, 25,000 people are expected to attend the events every day, with up to 80,000 people anticipated for the closing ceremony in Croke Park.

tks to IC for this info. it looks like the people who still follow the extremist pope who eg in 2009 UNexcommunicated bishop williamson, a holoaust denier, are just like him............Its great to see that the place was half empty and loads of who were there were visitors to Ireland.............The Irish people in general have left the church of the extremist pope.,,,,,,,,,,,As they hve in the USA where a link I cant post here I presume, said that 1 in 10 Americans are the 3rd lagest religion in the country. - EX catholics BTw the church treats gays with respect - there are numerous examples I've read of in eg England and the USA and one not far from where I live- a funeral service and the priest simply vanished when he discovered the dead persons child and their gay partner was there..................Not only do we have the endless hidden sexual molestation of children by sex starved priest, but now the the mental molestation fo gay people in their very hour of need........Dignity and respect - its just another lie.
@hollabackgurl, I am judging no-one, just making a reasoned observation regarding the unbalanced focus of this newspiece. This is a major newsworthy event due to it's international and profoundly religious dimensions. Catholic teaching on same-sex attraction is actually very sensitive to those who have that orientation. A hardline is taken with anyone who insults or physically attacks our gay brothers and sisters. The Church's insistence on retaining marriage for a man and a woman is not discriminatory against those of same-sex attraction, as it is just support for what marriage has always been, i.e the union between a man and woman which is open to procreation.
So the stadium for this Congress was half empty, the majority of participants were flown in from other countries and the Irish themselves were off watching Ireland play a football match. Will the Catholic Church get the memo that their hardline approach isn't working after decades of abuse scandals and coverups? Don't bet on it.
How is it that "Gays" have no civil rights? I'll answer that: since a strong, well funded homosexual(let's use the proper term instead of a sugar coated euphemism)lobby has badgered and bullied politicians, the AMA....and basically anyone who disagrees with them into redefining a sexual orientation as a newly created class of minority. Even in the face of nature's law, the teachings of every traditional religion and empirical evidence throughout the history of mankind itself. It is hard to argue with those who have lost their ability to properly reason when they have no set of moral absolutes but belong to the church of relativism, where no one is wrong or right and anything goes.
Right on hollabackgurl!
You've made it clear that you're willing to judge others Gearoid4, though Jesus expressly forbade that. You've made it clear that the suffering of minorities is of no consequence as long as the majority enjoy their rights, though Jesus had a lot to say about that too. "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean."- Matthew 23:27
This is typical IC stuff, when it comes to news-reporting about the Catholic Church. It is really online tabloid, journalism at it's worst, that is determined to find as many unfavorable angles as possible to portray events or personalities to do with the Church, rather than report the broader picture in which they are framed. Here we have a unique Faith event that brought thousands of pilgrims to Dublin from every continent on the Earth, and yet here we are faced with a headline that focuses on the protests of a small number of malcontents, who have issues with the reasonable teachings of the Church on marriage. The mind boggles at the preoccupations of some journalists.
Pretty transparent attempt by the gays to silence and intimidate those who disagree with them.
Alisaann...what you want is an aberrant relationship under the title of Marriage and expect the same rights as is normal between a man and woman in marriage. Guess you refuse to understand.
How dare you yellow journalists pretend that the big story of the Eucharistic Congress is a couple of dozen misfits possibly protesting How dare you yellow journalists try to say that the most important item about the Eucharistic Congress is that a couple of dozen misfits might protest because our Church tells them that what they are doing is unnatural and sinful, Which deep down in their own pschyes they most probably know to be true. Our Church is one of the very few institutions that condemn them so naturally they target us for their filthy and bizzare demonstrations. God Save Ireland!
gays DON'T want to STRIP hetrosexuals of their rights, they simply WANT the SAME RIGHTS & PROTECTIONS that straight people have TAKEN FOR GRANTED FOR YEARS. alisa
Alisaann...you've missed the whole point...pity.
marriage is NOT about having children....ALOT of married couple DON'T want or CAN'T have kids....you saying those who fall in that list, shouldn't be ALLOWED to marry....PLEASE....GOD MADE EVERYONE, AND THAT INCLUDES GAYS. alisa
To all LGBT...When God said, "It is not good for man to be alone" He did not create another man!! God created one Man and one Woman and gave them the mandate to be fruitful and multiply. Any two of the same sex cannot be "fruitful and multiply." It's common sense...biologically two of the same species will not make another!! That is what true Marriage is...to be joined in the love for each other and bring the fruit of that love into the world...in other words, children!!
My favourite part of the photograph accompanying the article is the person holding the notice saying 'look me in the eye and tell me I'm not equal'. It's impossible to look him in the eye because of the position of the poster. Oh those gays and their sense of humour!
