Father Oliver Brennan, the former parish priest in Dundalk County Louth who was falsely accused of child abuse, said support from family and friends kept him sane during the two-year ordeal.

Speaking on the Marian Finucane programme on RTE Radio One last Saturday, he said,

“It was the worst thing in the world, to be accused of the worst crime of all.”

According to the Dundalk Democrat, Fr Brennan said that on August 14, 2010, the bishop, who was with a child safe-guarding officer, read out to him the accusation.

He was told that he would have to leave the parochial house by 6pm that evening and a statement would be read out at the 6.30pm Mass.

Fr Brennan then went to stay at his brother’s house.

In the interview, Fr Brennan said he had not been told who made the accusation against him.

He added that he then decided to ask the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) to investigate the matter.

Then his accuser made a statement to the police in January 2011 which Fr Brennan said, “was mixed up”.

“At one point (in her statement) she said: ‘he never touched me’.”

Fr Brennan said he did remember the person who made the accusation.

“I was not in this parish but I remember giving her family some help.”

The accuser had been involved in a case in which she allegedly stole money and Fr Brennan had asked the police not to pursue it.

“I was trying to help her,” he said.

“The police interviewed me in April 2011. They were very thorough. They interviewed a lot of people in the area.

“In November 2011 they sent documentation to the Public Prosecution Service and three days later I was told is was over.

“I received clearance from the PSNI and the Public Prosecution Service.”

The Catholic Church sent documentation to the Vatican which was cleared last May.

The Diocese of Armagh held its own administrative process. On October 19, Cardinal Brady told Fr Brennan that there was no case to answer and that the allegation was false.

“It would put the fear of God into a lot of other priests,” said Marian.

Fr Brennan, who has now been appointed to a new parish, added that he hadn’t been invited back to the parish but he would have liked to have gone back to meet his former parishioners.

He said, initially, the ordeal made him bitter about the Church but said he no longer felt that way.

Many listeners called to express their support. Some of the callers said he should take a case against his accuser.

Fr Brennan did say some Blackrock parishioners wanted him to take a case, but he said:

“It’s very important to forgive.”

Hmm. This is very interesting and reminds me of a film I saw last month called 'The Hunt', a Danish film that focusses on a man wrongly accused of abusing a child in his care and the subsequent reverberations. It really has to be seen because it makes you very sympathetic to his plight and also how people almost like to jump on the bandwagon of a witch hunt. Of course, abusers need to be bought to justice but it can lead to terrible things if incorrect.
"The worst thing in the world to be accused of, the worst crime" WRONG Mr. Brennan . . The worst thing in the world is to be the VICTIM of what the VATICAN herself calls the "worst crime"! Crimen Sollicitationis - Title V deals with the sexual abuse of children. Title V The Worst Crime 73. To have the worst crime, for the penal effects, one must do the equivalent of the following: any obscene, external act, gravely sinful, perpetrated in any way by a cleric or attempted by him with youths of either sex or with brute animals (bestiality).
Gobdawpaddy - I also had 14 years and was an altar boy and never experienced, heard or witnessed anything improper and I also was around not only priests but Brothers and Nuns as well; a lot of years and a lot of clergy and never a problem.
It's called common sense. As someone who studied for the priesthood, the first rule of thumb is the "open door" rule. Any time that you are talking with a woman, you keep the door open. The woman is evil and set him up. Where is the counseling from those in charge? Now, you have to consider having cameras in the room during counseling.
This is indeed a refreshing story! Why would this girl falsely accuse Father Brennen, after he convinced the police not to pursue theft charges against her? Was she THAT greedy to have fabricated these scurrilous charges, many years later? He should sue her for defamation-no forgiveness here!!
The sexual abuse "gravy train " rumbles on ! The most lucrative scam that has appeared in Ireland for decades .Priests and religuous of the Catholic Church falsely accused , no compensation for them only a tarnished reputation ! Most of the alledged "victims" did very well financially and in lucrative job appointments .I must consult my schoolmates of 50 years ago to see if they can remember a Christian Brother pinching me for not knowing when Brian Boru won the Battle of Clontarf .Could get the price of a few round the world trips !
the priest who did nothing while this was happening to those children are just as guilty as the priest who committed those atrocities
HE ISN'T THE FIRST PRIEST NOR WILL HE BE THE LAST ACCUSED OF CHILD ABUSE. HOW SAD THAT SOMEONE WOULD ALMOST RUIN HIS VOCATION, HOW SELFISH OF THAT PERSON. REMEMBER CARDINAL BERNADINE FROM ILLINOIS HAD THE SAME ACCUSATION MADE AGAINST HIM. HE WAS LITERALLY MADE SICK FROM THIS SUFFERING AND EVENTUALLY DYING FROM CANCER AS A RESULT. HE, TOO, FORGAVE HIS ACCUSER.
I feel very sorry for this priest, as I do for the many very decent men who have been tarnished by the acts of a few ijn their midst over the years. I was in catholic school for fourteen years and served mass for some of that time, encountering many catholic priests in the process. There was never so much as a rumor of any impropriety. Some of them weren't great teachers, but they were all decent people.
