It's a case of belated puppy love for an adorable dog born with both male and female genitals that was abandoned by its original owners, only to be rescued in time for the holidays by the Galway Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA). The conditon is extremely rare.

The unusual beige colored pup, a lurcher aged only eight weeks, has a new foster family and a new name, He-She, but its first weeks were spent cold and alone, according to a report in the Galway City Tribune.

He-She was found by the GSPCA shivering under a car in an East Galway town. The dog was brought for treatment and eventually found a temporary foster home earlier this month.

He-She will undergo a “sex change” in the New Year – a double neutering that will render her as a female.

“We don’t know if she’ll need hormones after that,” the GSPCA’s Margaret O’Sullivan told the Tribune.

O’Sullivan added that so-called hermaphrodite dogs are a rarity, and the condition is considered to be unthinkable in some cultures, which is likely why He-She was left for dead.

“In all my life I’ve never seen a dog or a cat like this,” O’Sullivan added.

The GSPCA plans on finding a permanent home for He-She in the New Year.
