A Catholic priest who denied a lesbian communion during her mother’s funeral mass has left the Archdiocese of Washington after he was suspended for his actions earlier this year.

Reverend Marcel Guarnizo, originally from the Archdiocese of RuiMoscow, Russia, was on assignment at St. John Neumann parish when the incident occurred last year.

Barbara Johnson (51) was attending her mother’s funeral with her partner of almost 20 years on February 25 last when Guarnizo declared ‘a strong admonition that only Catholics in a state of grace can receive communion’.

Johnson told MSNBC, ‘I went up. I was standing next to my mother’s casket and he covered the bowl, and said, ‘I cannot give you communion because you are with a woman, and in the eyes of the church, that is a sin.’ I stood there with my mouth open in a state of shock for -- I don’t know how long.”

The 51-year-old then refused to attend her mother’s burial.

Within days of the funeral she received a letter of apology from the Archdiocese of Washington. Fr Guarnizo was later suspended on March 14 and a spokeswoman for the diocese confirmed this week he has left.

Noguchi Scheve, director of media and public relations at the Archdiocese of Washington, wrote in an email to msnbc.com: ‘Fr. Marcel Guarnizo is a priest of the Archdiocese of Moscow, Russia, who was given a temporary assignment at St. John Neumann parish.

“That assignment period has ended and Father Guarnizo is no longer in ministry in the Archdiocese of Washington.”

Responding to his departure, Johnson said on Monday that she was relieved by the decision.

“It gives me great comfort to see that the Archdiocese of Washington acted swiftly initially not only to point out that his behavior was wrong and not in accordance with their policy but then to suspend him,” Johnson said.

“Knowing that he will not be able to visit such pain on another family in the Washington archdiocese gives me and my family a lot of comfort.”

Thanks, Pathfindr! I was beginning to wonder how Cardinal Wuerl could STILL be in charge, when he was supposedly Cardinal during the Viet Nam era!! He would have to be pushing 100 now!
Mr. Phan, your comment made no sense and lacked validity, since Donald Wuerl was not a bishop in Pittsburgh during the Vietnam War. He was assigned in 1988, and before that he was auxiliary bishop to Seattle. If you want people to consider what you have to say, get your facts right.
It always is amazing that one of the largest gay cultures in the world discriminates against gay people. What a screwed up organization the Roman Church is!
pilib: "could be solved quite quickly if our misogynistic hierarchy would begin ordaining woman priests". As a half-way step, they could start ordaining lesbian priests.
With the amount of child molestation that has happened in the church, these priests just don't have a leg to stand on. I correct that, the only leg they have to stand on is the one we all have, true love for each other, life and God. The church is, after paying $1billion in settlement monies/legal fees, in no position to pass judgement on others. But they are always in a position to call people home to a direct connection with God. Focus on the latter, not on the former.
What a bunch of candy asses the archdiocese are by their behavior of that priest. He was doing the right thing. Those women were living in mortal sin and shouldn't have been given communion. He stood up for his religion and his religion let him down. God Bless you Father. Keep doing the right thing. His cowardly order won't forgive him but God will.
yeah, let's do with closed-minded BIGOTS like ya did with the CHILD RAPISTS in the church.....just MOVE them some place else...that seems to be the CATHOLIC CHURCHES ANSWER to BAD priests....STOP PROTECTING THE BAD ONES...AND CLEAN OUT THE CHURCH. ALISA
Sad, who you have to accept as a priest in this time of declining members of the priesthood. I'm sure this problem could be solved quite quickly if our misogynistic hierarchy would begin ordaining woman priests.
Murph: ".I am at this time still unclear as to how he knew she was a lesbian." Maybe the pic above doesn't do her justice.
PhlutiePhan claims that Ms. Johnson was "not denied Communion" at her mother's funeral. He states that she was given a host by a lay minister. Its curious that this important detail was not reported in the Irish Central article. And I find it especially curious that this essential detail is also absent from the online reports of The HuffPost, ABCNews, Yahoo News, The New York Daily News, MSNBC, Catholic Vote, The Washington Post, and USA Today. Not is this subject referred to in the Archdiocese's letter of apology. Isn't that strange? Tell me, Phan where did you get your information? What are your sources? Or did you simply make this "fact" up? And by the way, trashing Wuerl for issuing an apology was really unfortunate, but so sadly typical of you. Calling Wuerl a "Trojan Horse" is consistent with your idiotic conspiracy theorizing.
Does it matter. The point is it was not up to the priest to decide. And excuse me PhlutiePhan but were you there to witness everything that happened. What he did was wrong.
Well thought out and discussed PhlutiePhan.I am at this time still unclear as to how he knew she was a lesbian.
First of all, she was not "denied Communion" at the funeral Mass. Father Guarnizo refused her Communion and she was then given the host by a lay minister. Malachi Brendan Ryan has written plenty in his prolific works about Donald Cardinal Wuerl. Wuerl was clever enough not to have his named attached to conflict in regard to Barbara Johnson. The name of his auxiliary bishop was used in every report. I served in the Navy in Charleston, SC, during the Vietnam conflict. At that time, Charleston was under the direction of the diocese of Pittsburgh which was the headquarters at that time of Bishop Wuerl. I was told by the administration at a local Catholic high school which soon after was gutted with the liberal policies of Wuerl that Wuerl was one of three names submitted for archbishop of St. Louis. The list was rejected by JPII as too lenient and AB Rigali was sent. JPII soon visited the Mound City. With the death of JPII, the new pope absolved the background of Wuerl and he began anew his climb up the eclesiastical ladder. Wuerl is a "Trojan horse" and the direct antithesis of Timothy Dolan. Wuerl works in the "shadows" while Dolan is transparent and heartfelt.
