Bloody Sunday: Martin McGuinness should face trial, say British Army bigs

Bloody Sunday Report to be released next week
Bloody Sunday

A senior British general and a colonel who served in Northern Ireland have called for Martin McGuinness to face murder charges for his role in the IRA .

McGuinness is now Deputy First Minister in Northern Ireland, but he has stated he was in the IRA. He was believed to be second-in-command of the IRA in Derry at the time of Bloody Sunday.

It follows the revelation that the inquiry into the killing of 14 unarmed civilians on Bloody Sunday in Derry in 1972  will recommend prosecution against some soldiers of the British paratroop regiment.

The Saville Inquiry reports on Tuesday after 12 years, 2500 witnesses and $300 million spent.

Already there has been very hostile British and Unionist reaction to its expected findings.

Major-General Julian Thompson, a Royal Marines commanding officer in south Armagh during the Troubles, said that if Saville found troops guilty then McGuinness should be prosecuted.

"In that case, let's prosecute the IRA as well, men like McGuinness. How about drawing a line under this unless we want to go and prosecute all the IRA guys who murdered as well? It's ironic that these guys [British soldiers] could be prosecuted and the people who've murdered 20 times more than they have are being allowed off ," said Thompson.

Colonel Richard Kemp, a Northern Ireland tour veteran, said it was a "serious error" to prosecute soldiers so long after the event.

"And let's not forget that we have had IRA murderers let off and not prosecuted and brought into government," he said.

"Let's open an investigation into some of Martin McGuinness's activities, shall we?"

Politicians in Belfast  and London now fear that the recommendations of the Saville report may cause huge problems for the peace process with soldiers ending up in the dock.

Lord Trimble, the former Ulster Unionist party leader and Nobel peace laureate sated that the new report meant that soldiers would be tried for murder or manslaughter.

Meanwhile, it has been revealed that one of the ex-paratroopers who gave evidence to the Saville inquiry has been living under a witness protection program for 10 years amid fear that he will be gunned down by former colleagues.

The man, known as  Soldier 027, told the inquiry that soldiers in his company had been encouraged to "get some kills" the night before Bloody Sunday, and that was seen   as "tantamount to an order."

Bloody Sunday had nothing to do with Kent State. No marchers on Bloody Sunday taunted or threw anything at the British soldiers. The British soldiers weren't made to feel threatened; the marchers were. Exactly the opposite with Kent State.
Tell the brits to go screw themselves..They are the terrorists...just my opinion..hehe
Yes, the South of Ireland wants nothing to do with the loons in the North. Most people in the North are unemployed and the Irish taxpayers will NOT support them
I don't believe that the politicians in Leinster House would ever want anything to do with administrating another six counties, they have made a mess of the Twenty Six. All they done was look after their own agenda. They really don't want to have anything to do with the North.
To say that McGuinness should face trial, illustrates the mindset of the British Army. They try to intimidate those that stand up to them. The British army were the biggest source of terror in the North of Ireland, their leaders should be brought to account.
The comments about prosecuting the soldiers involved in Bloody Sunday and the stir it would cause, reminds me of the Kent State killings. Both incidences show the lack of training and maturity on the part of those with guns. The National Guardsmen could have been prosecuted, but cooler minds prevailed. Youth and "a moment in time", cannot be dismissed, but was/is it worth the flaming old animosties hidings just below the surface. We all have to move on and strive for a lasting peace.!
Moving closer to a united Ireland.
Instilling fear, intimidation, murder, maiming and usurping the system appears to be aim of terrorists all over the world, perhaps even the army also but, someone gives the orders and organizes these acts of death and destruction. They should pay the piper.
I can really understand their argument, but they are acting like children. "Well if we are in trouble, then they should be in trouble too!" B-O-O H-O-O. Build a bridge and get over it.
Pat52rk, You assume a lot and talk a load;you know what they say about people who do that! The I.R.A. have keep the peace and their word! Why don't you give it a try?
Unless you lived through 'Bloody Sunday' the days before and after--you should shut up. It is forever etched in those of us who were there.
Strongbow sees only his side of the conflict, as does pat52rk. They honestly have no concept of anything other than their opinion about what's happened in Northern Ireland, and will ignore anything that might show them how wrong they are. They're hardly alone in this childish attitude. Waste no time on them.
ahem Pat, and was it ONLY McGuinnes and Adams who pulled the strings? What about the collusion between the RUC AND the Loyalists terrorists? What about Monaghan and Dublin BOMBS? The Trick or treat murder? they do not count in YOUR eyes? Oh come on now, while we are naming names let go the WHOLE hog why dontcha?
canadianpat ,unlike you i'm from ireland and the ira killed men, women, and children who had nothing to do with the conflict. they planted bombs in bars and blew people to kingdom come , most of them were cowardly scumbags while people like adams and mcguiness pulled the strings
Free-staters created the border? I have heard it ALL now...
