Nothing funny about Phoebe Prince bullies‬, says Bill Cosby on CNN

Bookmark and Share

Comedian and activist Bill Cosby lashed out at the bullies who tormented tragic Phoebe Prince on a special anti-bullying segment on Larry King Live last night.

Cosby also told King that he could not believe that Prince's teachers in South Hadley High School, Massachusetts had failed to address what was happening to her.

'I don't know if shocked is the word as - as much as I just did not believe,' said Cosby. 'I don't believe that you can take a job as a teacher, as a superintendent, as a principal and - and not recognize, when you're being told by parents,' he added.

King reminded Cosby that all of Prince's teacher's and administrators said they had no idea the bullying was going on.

Cosby dismissed this idea and highlighted his own successful experience in dealing with school bullies in the past.

'You see, for instance, when our daughter Erica had a problem, she reported it to us. Mrs. Cosby then went to the school. The school immediately - and Erica is maybe seven, eight years old - immediately brought the parents in of the child who was doing the bullying. And it - it worked.'

The contrast between the Cosby families' experience and Prince's could not have been more stark.

Alongside Cosby to discuss bullying in Americas school's was Doctor Marilyn Irving, a professor at Howard University School of Education and CEO of Irving and Associates Character Education Services.

King began the discussion by referring to a survey that indicated one third of American kids have bullied or been bullied. Some 100,000 children skip school every day, fearing insults and worse, King said.

Responding to the figures, Cosby said they were a wake up call. 'I think that the adults - and there are supposed to be adults who have gone to college, studied psychology or something who are around these children - or should be around these children - they should be able to recognize it when they see it, as they're walking around the hallways, as the kids are sitting in the classrooms. They should be able to recognize it and play it for real."

'I'm really asking all of them to - to wake up, because, you know, for a child to hang him or herself, to me, that's a very, very violent, violent act - a way of taking yourself out because some people are practicing hatred toward you, whether they know what they're doing or not."

'People bully because of low self-esteem and problems that stem from home,' added Doctor Irving. 'Usually children who are bullied at home tend to bully in school.'

Of course the school officials are going to deny knowing about it, Mr. King. No accountability. Obviously the college psych classes weren't enough. Cameras should be placed in all schools. Then we may be able to minimize the bullying. The cameras with footage can protect our kids because it is evidently too much for the people trained to do on their own. I find it absurd that we protect our money with cams and not our children.
How can anyone compare the experiences of a celebrity's family with those of an average person? Cosby needs to retire.
I am a retired school teacher in the junior & senior high schools in Florida. During my years of teaching, it is sometimes difficult to see what is happening with the bullying process because the students actions may be occurring in an area that is not accessible to teachers. I did have an incident of sexual bullying in a 7th grade science class that was handled by the student counselors. I made sure that I was part of the process as to what was happening and the impact it was having on the bullied student. All the other teachers involved were made aware of he problem and the measures to deal with any reoccurring problems.
Bill Cosby never fails to enlighten!
It is time that bulling another person becomes a crime (punishable by law) no matter what the age, once a child starts school it should be inforced. not only should the school officials be held responsible and charged with a crime, the parents should be also be charged and punished by law. Parents are suppose to teach their children better and if this was my child I would sue not only the school officials but every parent whose child was involved with this heinous shocking deed.
Thank you Mr Cosby for your cander. You couldn't be more correct. My wife is a teacher here in Canada and she was saying that there is no way that the teachers and administrators would not know that this was going on, especially when the parents told them. It is terrible that this had to happen.
This is one of the saddest stories I have heard in my life (59 years). A young girl dead because of some SOB'S! Bullying has been going on since I went to school. Back then we handled the problem ourselves and I guarantee you it came to an abrupt end. These kids need to spend time in prison or at least let them get their asses kicked. If it was my daughter who had killed herself these little shits would be in a mess of troiuble. LOCK 'EM UP!!!
The same basic question arises - where were the adults?
I wish Phoebe had all of this support when she was alive. The outcome would have been much different.
Thank you to all that are exposing this ongoing problem that seems to be attacking alot of school in the US. My own son was exposed to constant torment by his classmates and it was widely known that it was occurring by his teachers. These attacks began like many from a immature individual who was jealous of a person and could only feel good about themself by trying to bring down another. These are children that are doing the bullying and should be made accountable and for there actions, but right along side of them should be the educators, who showed their immaturity in handling the situation.
Right on on Mr Cosby.
Bullying doesn't work unless the teachers look the other way, passively encouraging it.
Massachusetts' Governor Deval Patrick spoke poignantly about who is responsible for our children, in an story written by Boston Globe writer, Peter Schworm. You can find the April 9th., story on www.boston.com Titled, Governor Faults South Hadley Officials... The Governor states that, South Hadley School officials should be held accountable for their handling of the bullying case. He also points out that the responsibility lies with the parents of the bully, the other adults in the school, and the adults in the community. He then shares an important example. He describes his upbringing in a Chicago neighborhood, and how the children were under the close watch from parents and neighbors alike. He says, " There was all kinds of things we didn't have, but one thing we had was a very strong sense of community." This is a man who "gets it" If anyone needs good advice, regarding this case, he would be one to look to.
I think there is enough evidence out there to prove that the school officials did know about the bullying LONG BEFORE JANUARY 7, 2010. I think they are covering up to protect their jobs and reputations. The DA needs to take a further looking into ALL adults that may have been involved from the parents of the bulliers, the principal and vice principal, superintendent and every teacher that had Phoebe Prince in a class, study hall, library or did lunchroom patrol. It is time they stook up and take the high road. Smith and Sayer need to be the first to step down. Make Phoebe's death stand for something positive. There is a lot of guilt to go around and hope all the guilty parties know who you are.
About 8 years ago I spent a great deal of time in a school as a volunteer. I was disappointed to notice that teachers in the middle school/high school wing made a point to stay out of halls during class change. My husband and I would generally have to say things like, "Hey,young lady, don't kick the young men in the face." (I kid you not) the name calling, shoving, hip bumping, standing in front of and all kinds of disrespectful aggressive behavious was the norm. Forget "hall monitors" and this under a principal who genuinely wanted a school campus where people respected each other. The parent teacher organization was lucky if all the officers came to meetings. When parents were specifically asked to come they complained they had other obligations. And I remember my Dad setting up 400 chairs for PTA meetings and my friends Mom making 1200 cookies.
Bill Cosby is old school and is usually correct with his views on social problems and injustices, no matter what the topic. He's right, there's no way a thing like this could go on without a school official knowing about, unless those officials were sleeping under their desks.
Bill Cosby never ever fails to disappoint when he speaks about sensitive issues or entertains. He shamed the crew who can't be straight in South Hadley. Apparently, the leaders, educators are cut from the same cloth as the "stepford wives" and are having a very terrible effect on children and teenagers. To the point where they are behaving very cruely -individually, collectively and getting constant multiple signals that it's more than okay. It's very terrible when you get the "wrong people together" who are capable of looking the other way and are ready willing and able to sell their souls for their own financial protection and maintaining a plastic front.
Right on Bill. Keep up the good work.
