An anti-household charge demonstration in Dublin attracted an estimated 5,000 people from across Ireland in a protest against the €100 household charge.

According to Journal.ie, demonstrators began gathering at about 1:30pm around the National Convention Centre, where Fine Gael’s Árd-Fheis (annual party conference) is continuing. More volunteers arrived by busloads at around 2pm.

At the opening of the conference, Prime Minister Enda Kenny made a last-ditch plea to the 986,000 of the 1.6 million households who still had to pay the €100 charge.

"I know that no new taxes are popular. The household charge is no exception. But it is needed to fund local services in every city, in every town and in every village in our country," he said.

Environment minister Phil Hogan, whose department is responsible for the charge, said: "I never contemplate disappointment. I think it's great to see so many people complying with the law,"

A security cordon was put in place by police, who, according to eyewitnesses, had to intervene after some protesters tried to gain access to the Fine Gael event.

Despite fierce opposition against the controversial charge, Kenny got a surprise boost in an opinion poll, which gave his party a slight one percent increase in support, according to the Irish Independent.

On Friday night, Justice Minister Alan Shatter told the protesters to "get a life."

"I’ve never seen such a mountain made out of a molehill in my life," he said.

Representative democracy is a loaded dice game as straight as a crap game in a mob run Las Vegas casino. Fianna Fail (pron. Fee-anna Foil)/Soldiers of Destiny: The Republican (sic) Party; and Fine Gael (pron. Finna Gale): Christian Democrats have been in power in Ireland since partition, but are merely a petit bourgeois board of management for a privilege economic elite. The essential distinction is Fine Gael/old (West- Brit) money. Fianna Fail/new money). Contrary to the back biting from predictable pessimistic posters, more would have payed if it had been index linked (i.e. as percentage of income). A 100 euro annual Household Services Charge (HSC) is 1% to low income earners/social welfare recipients. It's only 0.01% to someone on 200,000 euro p/a like Taoiseach (pron. Tee-shock) Kenny. Hit the fat cats Taoiseach, or are they your golfing buddies after all. A Sinn Fein/Labour/ULA led coalition will save and integrate Ireland.
Yet another patented: "Irish Infintile Tantrum". The Irish will refuse to spend a Bob on anthing that does not sate their desire for instant gratification. The "public" health system is a shambles. But when i ask people why they don't give up a few night of "socializing" in their local pub and use the money saved on "private health insurance" like V.H.I. I get a scowl and they retort why should I give up my social life. I pay taxes the government will take care of me. Then when they lay on a gurney (trolly) in the Emengency room (A&E) for 7 or 8 days with very little attention from the understaffed medical deartment they whinge about how bad things are. "There's no such thing as a free lunch" lesson hasn't sunk in yet on the Emerald Isle.
Nothing ever changes in Ireland, and will not change until Sinn Fein is in power. Then real change will happen.
Gee they lied to ya about "change" ,Ya voted e'm in ,then they turned on Ya and increased taxes -sounds very familiar to us Americans!
Dibble, fair play but 5000 people out of 4.5million is not fighting back. The numbers who have shown up at marches over the past few years have been pathetic. The biggest crowd turned out for the Anti war march before the US invaded the Middle East.
"dibble2008" - I applaud your passion!
The Irish government has turned against the people it was elected to serve. Under orders from Brussels the government is now at war with its people.
I think it is a conflict the world over with governments, people who are drawn to be in government think they have the right, the duty to spend the peoples money on things they would never spend their own money. It takes them about 2 seconds to turn from a "real" person to a High Government Official who cannot see so far down as to understand why real people object to this spending.....after all they are only trying to help those poor little ones who would spend their money foolishly
We are betrayed. Fianna Gael who were in opposition to Fianna when they were in power, promised to counter every single austerity that fianna fail imposed. They made promises daily to target the bond holders and they swore to not burden the tax payer. We voted them into power because the people wanted these changes. Now they carry on exactly as the last government and they hide behind every single act by saying this was introduced by the last government. Its in the programme for government. We inherited this problem. Every single promise has been broken by the Fianna Gael / Labour coalition. The people were despondent after fianna Fail. But now we are angray. We are very very angry and we won't be betrayed again. We have spoken. Almost 1 nillion of us have refused to pay this tax after the government we voted in threatening us at every turn and a minister hogan bullying a scaring people with prison and fines. This unjust tax takes no account of a persons means. From the richest to the poorest they called for a 100 euro payment. This is blatantly unfair and we will never pay it. We are on the road to challenge this useless government who have betrayed us and continue the same road as previous Fianna Fail. We will not take this any longer. It is time to fight back and we are.
