American owner selling off Irish wedding castle for $22m

An 830-year-old Irish castle and grounds in County Kildare is up for sale by Irish-American owner, David Conway.

KilKea castle, home to many Irish weddings over the years, has an estimated sale value of $22 million.

The castle sprawls across 145 acres and has been a four-star hotel and country club for 20 years.

Last year alone, the castle was one of the most popular wedding castles in Ireland with over 120 weddings.

General manager John Kissane said most weddings generated an income of about $31,000.

However, last year the company which leased the castle from Conway went into liquidation and now the Irish American wants to sell up.

Conway, 75, who divides his time between Ireland, Hong Kong and the U.S.,  says he plans on retiring once the castle is sold.

International auction house, Lisney, is advertising the sale of the proterty in Hong Kong and China. It is believed a Hong Kong consortium is to visit the castle in Kildare in Apirl to view its potential.

Lisney is marketing the hotel as a perfect wedding destination and list the following information on the castle.

  • The four story hotel, has two bars with open fires and two dining rooms on the first floor.
  •  
  • The Kildare room is often used for wedding ceremonies.
  •  
  • The reception hall is in the courtyard.
  •  
  • There are a dozen three story terraced houses with 24 bedrooms and a further 12 en suite bedrooms in the main castle.
  •  
  • The country club has a swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna and gym.
  •  
  • The golf club is often visited by locals. Beside the clubhouse there are 33 lodges.

I sure hope someone of Irish extraction, with the requisite money will buy this beautiful castle. It sounds like the only people in the world with money these days are Aisan or Arab. Nothing against those people, but it would be like an Irish person buying the Taj Mahal, for God's sake.

My first thought is that the castle must employee alot of people to keep the hotel, country club, weddings and a golf course afloat. I would certainly hope that the owner would be a thinking of keeping things as are. As an American-Irish person, I would give my right arm to be able to buy it and continue it's Irish purposes.

I DON'T think you should be selling IRISH property to a bunch of GOOKS.!! Thats IRISH property!! Even if the IRA bought it , it would still be IRISH !! God forgive you!The little bast---s Steal everything that aint nailed down,pay coooly wages & put the rest of the world out of work !!
