Irish American billionaire Chuck Feeney has been praised by Warren Buffett among the world’s richest men as the person who has inspired a ‘giving while living’ pledge by scores of billionaires who have pledged to give away the majority of their fortunes while still alive.

Feeney , a huge benefactor in Ireland, was first to announce he was giving away all his money while still alive and now many billionaires are following suit.

Last Thursday saw the second official meeting of  the group led by billionaire Warren Buffett and Bill Gates' " Last February they started the group which encourages the wealthiest people in the United States to give most of their money to philanthropic causes.

Buffet, a billionaire through investment and industry, called New Jersey philanthropist and Irish American, Chuck Feeney the spiritual leader of the group. Feeney plans to give most of his money to charity. Buffet said "He wants his last check to bounce".

Feeney, the founder of The Atlantic Philanthropies, one of the largest private foundations in the world and former co-owner  of the Duty Free Shoppers Group, wrote a letter to Buffett and Gates last February. It read "I cannot think of a more personally rewarding and appropriate use of wealth than to give while one is living - to personally devote oneself to meaningful efforts to improve the human condition. More importantly, today's needs are so great and varied that intelligent philanthropic support and positive interventions can have greater value and impact today than if they are delayed when the needs are greater."

Buffett spoke to the Associated Press on Friday and it seems that the group’s second meeting went well. He sees the meeting as a great chance for billionaires to pledge to give away half of their wealth, meet each other, compare note, eat and laugh.

So far 69 couples or individuals have signed up. Buffett knew only 12 of the 61 people who attended the Miraval Resort in Tucson. He said "They all more than fulfilled my expectations."

Melinda Gates, the co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, said she was pleased to see how open the guests were. She explained that conversation at her table had drifted toward what were the biggest mistakes the philanthropists had made.

All of the philanthropists seemed to agree that gathering as a group was certainly a beneficial exercise, for the company if nothing else.

Tashia Morgridge, who works with her husband, Cisco Systems chairman John Morgridge, said "One of the things about being a philanthropist, in many ways it's rather a lonely job." Tashia and her husband work to improve US education through the Denver-based Morgridge Family Foundation.

George Kaiser, the chairman of BOK Financial Corp who aids early childhood education and social services programs said "Being able to share with other people who are agonizing about the same decisions is extraordinarily useful."

It is this group's goal to pool their dollars in the mission to improve education, the environment and other causes. The event gave them a chance to share ideas about how to do this.

Jean Case, CEO of the family foundation started by her and her husband, America Online founder Steve Case, said "There's a strong desire in this group to learn from each other."

As ideas were shared the common theme emerged amongst the group that they wanted to do more impactful and more effective philanthropy and to inspire the average person to give money.

@LinLinisme, I'll send you a gift card.
Hello is there anyone who would like to respond? I think that you should be interested in this. Send me a figt card for groceries and I will be thankful
@Searlit Thank you for the lovely answer. I am pointing out that there are so many people, who have worked their whole life then bcome disabled and have to live on about $600.00 a month. It is not enough to have good food and the medicine that is needed, not to mention paying the bills for other necessary things. I hope that you are doing well and keep that caring attitude. That is the greatest!
I think it is great they are giving their money away I wish I was given enough to buy a small building and open up a really nice restaurant with low prices and hire the people that need the jobs not like where I live where if you are over 37 you are not hired cause they want young girls and guys to work instead of people with experience
This could be lovely. However, when giving large amounts to this or that supposedly Non-profit organization, the biggest share of this money will end up paying outrageous perks to someone who is already extremely rich. It would be great if there were a way to help individual people who are in need. It could be just a few hundred to help someone on Social Security as I am. That would make life worth living. Perhaps pay off a bill or two so an older poor person doesn't cty themselves to sleep with worry. BILL GATES PLEASE READ THIS. I WILL GIVE YOU MY PHONE NUMBER AND TELL YOU WHAT IT IS TO LIVE LIKE THIS
@ LinLinisme, It's not right what is happening to seniors. Unfortunately, the multinational corporations bottom line has become the only thing that matters to speculators. They have lost all ability to measure what is of value. They are consumed by their own consumption, of material wealth, denying any value to the sanctities of life. I hope you will get the help you need.
Does anyone ever read this? I would like you just to say, "Hi" I do read your comments and answer many. Yes, a 20 dolllar gift card would buy me food for a week.
Great story. Makes me feel a little better about the state of mankind.
Send me a $20.00 gift card for Wal-Mart and I will be happy
Why not just tighten the tax laws so that the filthy rich pay their fair share in the first place? The gap between the rich and poor is growing rapidly with every year. This ultra capitalist system is destroying the planet & keeping low-paid hard workers in poverty. It's becoming more & more unfair & can't last much longer, it's only a matter of time before the people rise up.
Great story amongst a world seemingly gone mad. This group of billionaires is what makes American great. No self centered royals in this group. So much of what we are depends on our brains and neurological system and research doctors are saying "The brain is the new frontier." We are on the verge of finding cures for chromosome disorders, schizophrenia, autism, parkinsons, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, depression and compulsions. These disorders make a person's life a living hell, along with the family member's who love them. It now seems many of these disorders were caused by famine and wars in the past as food deprivation caused a change in the genes. It would be the most wonderful thing if some of the donated money could go to better the lives of those who lead a life of hell. In today's world it would also include our veterans who suffer from Post Traumatic Stress and brain damage. God Bless each and every one of these millionaires. What an uplifting story.
I think it is one of the sweetest and unselfish thing I have ever heard of. It also set off a sort of chain reaction with other billionaires. It reminded me of Jesus and the rich man. He asked Jesus what he had to do to receive eternal life in heaven. Jesus said to give all he had to the poor and follow him. This man was a good man in every way but didn't want to give his money away... You know, it is not our money, we are blessed abundantly from God... We need to turn around a give to others who are not as fortunate as we are. Our church supports a free health clinic on the Gulf of Mexico. All nurses, doctors and clerical people are volunteers. All the medicine is paid for by people who take us on as their charity, dinners, other churches help us and a few grants. We are always trying to think of ways to help people whoare sick, have no money or insurance. We will accept anyone... I am so proud as others are for having this clinic and we work hard to maintain it... C C
It would be nice if American Billionaires gave to people in America. I for one am 68, living on almost nothing. Will have my computer shut off in a month, because I can't pay to have TV and Internet. So will have nothing at all to occupt my time. I am disabled and don't get enough to eat or the foods I should be eating to gain some strength. There are a lot of people like me in America, who can't afford good food, go without medicine and have nothing. Can't pay bills, eat decent food. Help America, those of you who are American. Give to the people (like me) not to co-operations who will not use the money wisely. The Administrators of these (charities) get so many perks and live a high life style while those of us must continue as we are
I'm sorry, the irony of this isn't lost on me. Here we have a support group for billionaires. Capitalists, Who Want to Do the Right Thing. I morally support these humanitarians - I give what I can. Thanks!
I saw a documentary about Chuck Feeney on RTE here a good while back.He contributed alot of money towards the cost of a modern collage campus..in Limerick I believe but I may be wrong. What greater gift is there than the gift of education.God bless the man.
