Lord Voldemort was not the only one defeated by Harry Potter this weekend, as “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” took in $168.6 million, kicking Batman “The Dark Knight” out of the first spot for best opening weekend ticket sales.

Warner Bros.’ “The Dark Knight” previously held the top spot grossing $158.4 million domestically on its debut weekend and has now been bumped down to the second spot.

The final installment of the popular wizard franchise also knocked down the “Twilight Saga: Eclipse” for best domestic gross for midnight shows with $43.5 million, as compared to the $30 million “Eclipse” made last year, reported the Huffington Post.

The “Deathly Hallows: Part 2” also casted spells overseas taking in $157.5 million from Wednesday to Friday. International sales have yet to be released by the studio for the full weekend but are expected to boost the franchise up to the $1 billion mark.

“This will be the biggest `Harry Potter' by far," said Dan Fellman, head of domestic distribution at Warner Bros. "A billion dollars is definitely going to happen."

For now, the first of the films, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” holds the highest number for the franchise at $974.8 million, but the studio expects the finale to exceed that amount.

The film, which is also available in 3D, had a leg up over “Dark Knight” because of inflation and extra costs for 3D films. Without those advantages, the title still belongs to “Dark Knight” for most tickets sold over opening weekend.

Fans everywhere pulled out their finest Hogwarts attire and flooded the nearest movie theater to watch the end of a 10-year saga, as their favorite boy wizard appeared one last time as Harry Potter—giving Warner Bros. exactly the results they expected.

After 10 years of breaking records, the franchise continues to be one of the most popular and successful in cinema history. When Warner Bros. releases the final numbers, it will be determined if the end of this era transformed J.K. Rowling’s magic into a worldwide, billion-dollar phenomenon.
