After years apart, Oasis reunited, setting the stage for their long-awaited 2025 UK & Ireland tour, including two huge Dublin shows at Croke Park.
Ahead of the gigs, their deep Irish roots, shaped by summers in Mayo and Meath and lifelong family bonds, remain at the heart of who Liam and Noel Gallagher are.

Liam and Noel Gallagher were born in Manchester to Irish parents: Peggy (née Sweeney), hailing from Charlestown, County Mayo, and their father, Tommy, from Duleek, County Meath. Their maternal line is rooted in rural West Mayo, while their paternal roots trace back to great‑great‑grandparents from Slane and Downestown, County Meath.

They’ve often acknowledged that their working-class upbringing amid Ireland-immigrant communities in Manchester profoundly shaped Oasis. As former bandmate, Paul “Bonehead” Arthurs put it, speaking to Irish Music Daily, "It’s working class people from strong Irish backgrounds making music… Celtic blood.”

Summers in Ireland

Childhood summers in Ireland were formative for the Gallagher brothers. Peggy would drive her sons for six weeks to her native home in Mayo. It was a “culture shock” at first, with haystacks, nettles, turf-burning and green fields but those summers left a lasting impact.

In 2015, Noel told the Irish Independent, “Our summers seemed endless there, just brilliant. We loved it."

GAA, music and family

Between the fields and pubs of Mayo, the brothers played Gaelic football for Manchester’s Oisín’s GAA. Noel even played at Croke Park aged 16.

Their father, Tommy’s, Irish country-DJ sets, their uncles’ fiddle and flute playing, plus pub sessions in Charlestown pubs, like JJ Finan’s, all grounded them in Irish culture.

With Oasis back on the road in 2025, their rekindled relationship comes full circle in Ireland. In August 2024, both brothers visited Charlestown. Photos showed Liam playing guitar at JJ Finan’s pub and championing the local GAA club site, the Irish Times reported. The reunion buzz in Charlestown was "palpable" as locals and pub owners celebrated their return.

As Oasis prepares to play Croke Park on August 16 & 17, 2025, the emotional thread of Mayo and Meath runs through every chord and lyric. Liam and Noel Gallagher’s Irish roots have always defined them. Now, with Oasis reunited and preparing their most personal tour yet, their homeland isn't just where they come from—it’s where they belong.
